Our legal system is highly fucked up. In 1982 Anthony Porter was convicted of murder on a very strong case and is sentenced to death in Illinois. In 1998, a class of journalism students from Northwestern University perform a half assed investigation and conclude that Anthony Porter was wrongfully convicted and some other guy, Alstory Simon was the actual murderer. The investigation by they Northwestern students was filled with shitty witnesses, lies, clear cut alterior motives, you could have driven a truck through this investigation. Yet, the State of Illinois released Porter and charged Simon. Simon ends up pleading guilty and gets 37 1/2 years in prison. In 2014 after recantations and other evidence proving the Northwestern investigation, the state threw out the Simon case and exonerated him. TLDR; The State of Illinois convicted a guy of capital murder in an iron clad case, some college kids do a half assed investigation, get the guy off, get an innocent man convicted instead and then after spending 15 years in prison he gets exonerated too. |
