Is it Vasaline that you smear over the ends of the cylinders , to help prevent this ? Vaseline is good in most cases but it will run off if it's hot weather. I used to use Crisco but it goes rancid in your "possibles" bag. Plain old axle grease works pretty danged good if you don't forget to put it that one damned time. |

Allot of people use Crisco also. It is non petroleum based Quoted:

Is it Vasaline that you smear over the ends of the cylinders , to help prevent this ? Chain fires happen not from the front end, but from the back end, due to loose caps on the nipples. But yes folks use Crisco, but its more for lube. If you use an oversize ball and shave a ring of lead when seating, there is really no way for a spark to get past the ball and to the powder. |

I have a few. Pietta 1858 Remington .44 stainless. Euroarms Rogers & Spencer .44 in London Gray. This is my favorite cap and ball sixgun. Mid 1970s vintage Ruger Old Army .45. Uberti 1851 Colt Navy .36. Euroarms 1858 Remington .44. Pieta 1858 Remington .44 with 5.5" barrel. Pietta Remington .36 with 6.5" barrel. Pietta 1858 Remington with .45 Colt gated Kirst Konversion. Re the shoulder stock question: If you add a shoulder stock to a percussion revolver it's not governed by the NFA, because it does not fire fixed ammo. If you add a shoulder stock to a cartridge conversion without getting a Form 1 approved first, prepare your anus. |

I was actually considering picking one up recently, however it seems the #11 caps are hard to find right now. I use Remington No.10 caps on my percussion revolvers. No.11s are for my rifles. Yup...You could always swap nipples too...but caps of any kind are hard to find presently. |

Will be picking mine up in the next day or two. Although you're not supposed to run BP in the Uberti repros (they lack the gas ring that served to prevent fouling from locking up the cylinder), so it isn't exactly fitting for this thread. |

I realize that I live in Southern Indiana, and the NMLRA is only a couple hours away, and I can shoot a blackpowder match every weekend if I wanted to, but I can find caps and every type of roundball needed for pistol, rifle or musket in multiple shops all around me. Is this just an Indiana thing? When I was a Ft Bragg there was a Muzzleloading shop right off base, and NY was just as easy as here. Is it not that way all over the country?

Sort of a kit. It is all cast parts that need to be cleaned and polished. The stock is basically shaped, but still allot of fitting to do. The trigger guard and butt plate take a good bit of time to inlet. The barrel is pretty much ready to go, but you have to breach it, silver solder the lugs, and drill and tap the touch hole liner. The Brass side plate is something I added the parts kit just comes with a steel one. The trigger, I also ended up using something with a higher pivot point than what it came with.. ( results in a nicer trigger pull) The lock is pretty much ready to go. I usually tear them down and do some polishing on them anyway. This is where the kit came from. http://longrifles-pr.com/blunderbuss.shtml I usually stop by there every year as they are about 20min from where my Dad lives. Quoted:
