[ARCHIVED THREAD] - The Clash (Page 1 of 2)

Early Clash was the very definition of punk rock. Look up “I’m so bored with the USA”. Great song. It’s my anthem since the hershey messiah was elected. Also Watch Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten With Props to the Clash they were a commercial success and not the very definition of Punk Rock not even close to it; TSOL, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Social Distortion and the originator of punk AKA Sex Pistols. |

Quoted: Clash was OK but I played the grooves out of my Sex Pistols albums. Almost forgot did the same to the The Specials. Grew up in SoCal and had KROQ and Rodney Bingenheimer(sp) Fuck that makes me feel old looking back on it. Specials, Beat, Selecter, I couldn't listen to them enough in the day. I brainwashed my kids to love Ska when they were growing up, so I hear it all the time from them now. Pretty cool to hear the new stuff. I still love the originals, but some of the new bands really rock the punk thing but keep the Ska roots.

I grew up in LA & OC as well. Been around the scene quite a bit. The Clash predates all the bands your speaking of with exception to the Sex Pistols. The Clash and the Sex Pistols are more or less equals in their vintage. Sex Pistols were more NOFX and The Clash was more Social D. |

I pretty much freaked my parents out, growing up in the wonder bread community of Newport Beach. My kids just think that music is weird. The only reason I don't really think the Clash was that punk is because their music was studio produced to a greater degree. Punk was more of a garage band sound with the three chord type riff. |

New wave is my guilty pleasure
Early Cure will always hold a special place in my heart. Speed One of the first -- and most important -- lessons I learned in college (many, many years ago) was that chicks who liked The Cure put out. Chicks who dug The Smiths did not. Asking which band she preferred was a question that needed to asked early to avoid wasting time on a celibacy-loving Morrissey worshiper. The girls who liked The Cure wanted approval and acceptance. The ones who liked The Smiths wanted that whining vegetarian. |

I listened to the Smiths but their tunes would make you want to slit your wrists if you were even remotely depressed. |

Saw the twice. Once on the Combat Rock tour and once after Mick Jones left for BAD.
The second show wasn't very good but the CR show was awesome. I almost got stabbed.
Not a Cure fan either but I saw them once. I went to see the opening act, John Ottway. Cheryl |

The speaker towers were covered in camo netting and people started pulling it off, nearly pulled the spears down too. Somehow it came off without pulling the speakers down. Then, people were gathering up pieces of the net and ripping it apart. I was reeling up a big chunk, and like two people eating spaghetti, I came up to the guy on the other end who had a knife. He was using it to cut the netting and he started waving it at me so I let have it.

My mom just built a new home in Corona Del Mar, right above Crystal Cove. I know what you mean there. LOL! Listen to their first album. They were right there with the SP at the time. I believe they did their first tours together. Malcolm and Bernie (the managers) were partners at one point. |

I was a little late to the game when I personally discovered that band fall of 1980. (London Calling)
The Clash gets the credit for kicking off my musical adventure and was the gateway drug for me to discover other amazing English groups like Joy Division, The Jam, Buzzcocks, and a ton of other great bands. I should have bought stock in 4AD. London Calling made me go "wow". The first album, (Import version), really opened my eyes... after that it was a wild ride until Combat Rock. |

Anybody have any Gary Numan and the Tubeway Army? yeah I admit I did. Gary Numan is a fucking genius. He still rocks and he's still relevant. Even out on the "Dance" tour he was awesome. I regret not going to London with my friends to see Tubeway Army play. I still have all my vinyl but my copy of Replicas is worn the fuck out. |
