What makes this weapons os bad? Besides its a french weapon.

I think because Solid Snake used it.

Actually from what I've heard it's a pretty, wait, er... respectable, wait, er.. dang its hard use those term on a French weapon. Supposed to be a good performer, just ugly. I think it's mostly neglected because it's French.
1/13/2005 11:34:46 AM EDT
[#3]
I don't know that much about it, but I think it is a fairly solid weapon.  I don't think it is designed for the same 5.56mm round as the NATO standard, but I THINK it is interchangeable.  Also, it has a high rate of fire on auto, 950 rpm.
1/13/2005 11:38:41 AM EDT
[#4]
Extended full auto firing can cause the recoil spring to get hot enough to lose its temper resulting in malfs.

I've heard it's solid, and the few French I've talked to about it really liked it.

It's a bullpup that can be quickly converted from right to left hand usage, and it has a built in bipod.

Yeah, but that can be changed. I can see more potential with it then the XM-8.

IMHO, the (iron-only) sights are its weakest point. Aside from that (if you are comfortable with the whole bullpup concept), it is an excellent rifle from what I know.

They use a round that is basically M193 (there may be minor differences).

It's notable that France's GIGN (their SpecOps/CT group) uses the SIG 551 instead of the FAMAS...

When a country's Spec-Ops (usually the only troops that have a choice) doesn't use that country's domestic weapon, that speaks volumes about that weapon.

If it means anything, the French Foriegn Legion troops on the special on the history channel (?) had the FAMAS. Do you think they would prescribe to the specops logic in the same way?

I think that the French troops are of good quality. Their army, as a whole, may be third rate, but that doesn't reflect the quaility of their soldiers.

Good to see that you're still around, dewoitine.

The FAMAS is more like an AK-47 than an M-16, if that makes any sense.  It's reasonably accurate, but not really a tack-driver, but you can drag the thing through the dirt and the mud all day.  It's awkward to adjust to the bullpup; you have to do things differently than you would with a conventional rifle, but once you get the hang of it, it's no slower or more cumbersome, just different.

Now a few words from someone who actually owned one...

The Good:

Fit and finish were very very good. Very well made rifle.

Very compact.

Rugged.

Reliable. Never had a malf.

Very manageable shooting characteristics. Recoil was not noticable. Built in bipod was nice.

****

The Bad:

Barrel not chromed. Mine developed a small rust pit after a few hundred rounds. But it was 1/9 5.56 NATO.

VERY short sight radius.

Front sight VERY (almost unimaginably) crappy...it was a slat of sheet metal that had a set screw in the side to BEND it to one side or the other for windage adjustments.

Kind heavy, about 8.5 lbs if I remember.

*****

Any other questions just ask.

Very high rate of fire.
Completely ambidexterous for all controls, charging handle, and case ejection!
Feeds from a 35rd box mag, but also takes M16 mags.
.223/5.56mm SS109. Same bullet as the M855, less velocity usually.

Bullpup.
Ugly as sin.
Built like a french whore.

I've seen recent videos of Legionnaires having some kind of red dot sight on their FAMAS rifles.  They weren't elite, either.

The adapter to put an optic on the FAMAS is quit elaborate, as the "upper" is just a plastic shell.

Eh...it's a matter of opinion.

The Neutral Observer likes the bugle.  Others might not.

The Neutral Observer happens to personally like the AK-47.  The Neutral Observer prefers it to the M-16 and it's variants.  Others may feel differently.

It comes down to what you can reliably make shots with.  If you can do that, all other considerations are secondary.

you mean this?

The real one was called papop (poly arme poly projectiles )the french equivalent of the oicw but it seems what this is a dead project.
Weight: 7kg
Size: 30 X 83 X 12 cm
5.56mm assaut rifle (40 rounds) coupled with a 35mm semi auto grenade launcher (maybe a smart cannon) with hi-tech rounds (3 rounds)

"Le Clairon" is considered a fine battleworth weapon……probably the best of the bullpups. I've heard of no reliabiliy issues regarding it… I'd gladly see ourhated SA80 replaced by it!

They have their faults, but the French DO build some fine weapons systems.
