They actually renamed it? Considering they only got a couple, surprised they didn't just stick with "Kfir"

What was the rationale behind that lease, anyway?

Yeah, according to Wiki the USA received 12 Kfirs from Israel. I have no more info on the extent or purpose other than my own speculation that it was to expose some US military pilots to the flight characteristics and tactics the Kfir offers. The Israeli Kfirs are highly regarded... as just about anything war-related is that is produced or modified in Israel and utilized by Israel's Mossad...!

There are not many photos of the F-21's available. Probably the most obscure US military jet designation in the last 30 years or so. Makes for a cool aggressor for sure!

More F-16 & F15 Aggressor goodness:

Isn't Kfir Israeli for lion?

I'd say the most obscure aircraft were all the Comblock aircraft that have made it into the US. 21 Kfir's are quite a lot.

What, don't the Japanese like to paint over access panels and hinges on their F-15s!?

Kfir is Lion Cub.

The Navy and Marines wanted a supersonic aircraft that was "not the same" as an F-4 or an F-14 so they could practice and teach DACM.

At the time the Navy didn't have the money to buy F-16's and every F-18 was going to replace A-7's in the attack community.

I knew a couple of guys from the 80th but they had been there for awhile. I probably ran into your buddy but in Jan my entire thought process was consumed with the 30 day count down... lol
