MG42 is a MUCH better gun. And WAAAAY more fun to shoot. I cut a car in half with a MG42 back when 8mm was dirt cheap. Its insane we didn't just adopt the MG-42. +2 I have never met anyone who likes the 60 who have shot & CLEANNED IT I'm looking at a half moon scar where a M60 recoil spring bit a hole in the webbing of my left hand while cleaning it back in the 80's. |

All MG's are fun to shoot when someone else is buying the ammo! Cleaning an M-60 is just as much a PiTA as the 240/249 |

Never had a prob with it in the late 80's and loved shooting it at the
end of the fiscal year. don't really remember having probs with those either. Shot the MG3 for a Silver Shutzenschneer(sp) in Germany and I thought the '60 was better except the quick change barrel. |

I've always wanted an M60, ever since I was real young. I wanted one until uncle sugar gave me one to tote around. I learned to not like it in a hurry.
I was just about to post THIS. I always got to hump the pig due to my size...and I was not happy until it was trigger time. |
| MG42 is a work of art. The M60 is a pig. The RPD is a wonder that the Soviets created. All pale in comparison and pay homage to Mother Deuce. I know, two different classes of weapons systems but like the saying goes... the M2, turning cover into concealment for 90 years. |

At GSII I got to run a few rounds through an M60E3. It was one of the high points of my life as a shooter. You ever make it to Camden when they had the MG shoots? That's where I cut the car in half with the MG42. No. I did get to watch another arfcommer run a belt through the MG42 at GSII, though. Braaaaaaaaaaaaap! |

The 60 was a nightmare to clean, and there's no god damned bailing wire on the 240 or SAW. That said, I love the looks and the sound of the M60 in it's classic form. There is just something about it. |

Shot the MG3 for a Silver Shutzenschneer(sp) in Germany and I thought the '60 was better except the quick change barrel. Late 80's key word here. The lessons learned about the care and feeding of The PIG in S.E. Asia in the 60's and early 70's and passed on to the younger generation left with said younger generation during the " build down" of the early 90's. Too bad those lessons never made it into the TM. Keep a decent op-rod spring in it and she will run. ( Hint. If the op rod spring guide does not stick out past the end of the receiver when the but stock is removed its time for anew one ) 4 pounds lighter the the M240B and fire-able from the shoulder or prone unsupported ( short bursts only please ) The PIG was gem once you got to know her. M60E3 was even better but time marches on. |

This is all you have to do to never want one. I had one for over a year and have only briefly wanted one again. |

NOW we're talkin'! BTW, compared to the M73/219's we used as coaxes the '60 was ok. |

I have about equal time on all three and am going to have to agree with Red 5 on this one. They each have their easy and tough spots to clean but its the same amount of work overall. |
| Fuck the M-60. I had to carry one around in 2004. The armor batt. we were opconned to had a few left over from their last tank fielding, and decided their retrans needed a belt fed, but didn't rate a 240. I loaded up my canteen pouches with a hundred and fifty rounds each, and couldn't hardly keep my balance in the back of the truck. |

SLIP Carbon Killer, a 60 or 240 reciever brush, and a bore snake and you can clean the 240 or 249 in under 15 minutes to be inspection clean, the Pig takes longer and far more attention to detail in cleaning and reassembly. |

A machine gun designed by refrigerator engineers, using the worst aspects of the Bren, MG42 and Lewis Gun in 120 days IIRC. Yeah, a sure winner... Kharn Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile I remember two fisting them for a laugh....never got to fire them that way...but as a soldier I loved the PIG.... |

Thats what I was hoping that this thread was about. |

I love the pig. Carrying it was a bitch but everyone carries a ton of shit anyways. If only the weapon wasn't so front heavy it could have been much more comfortable to carry.
Cleaning was a bitch; the 249 isn't even in the same league of PITA. Nothing was worse than trying to clean the upper feed tray cover. My experience was if you kept it clean and heavily oiled it'd run just fine. If you think carrying the pig was a bitch; it's a million times better than being the asst gunner. I hate that MF'in tripod and spare barrel! |
