I firmly believe that the most important rights are the rights which allow us to maintain our other rights. Amedments to our constition provide us many inalienable rights, but some are key to the prevention of tyranny because they empower the people to preserve their freedoms.

Freedom is preserved by four boxes:
THE SOAP BOX
THE BALLOT BOX
THE JURY BOX
THE BULLET BOX

Therefor, I see 6 of our 27 amedments as being the most important guarantors and protectors of our rights and freedoms:

Amendment I protects the Soap Box
Amendments XIV, XV, and XIX protect the Ballot Box
Amendment V protects the Jury Box
Amendment II protects the Bullet Box

No mention of the X'th? Honestly, I think that's one of the most important ones in there, and also one of the most often ignored.

What's you case as to how this protects a box or otherwise is a right that empowers the people to guarantee their other rights?

Interesting take on things.

As the forefathers saw it, #2 ultimately guaranteed all the others.  Post Lincoln, #2 is pretty much worthless as a guarantee, but it at least lets us have fun and noisy toys.

If the 10th was followed as designed you would have no worries for the rest.
The 10th put most decisions/rights in the hands of the states..thus closer to the people.

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."

I agree... because the cartridge box (bullet box) is that last box that we are supposed to use to guarantee freedom. Thus II is the ultimate guarantor of the other amendments.

I think it was hoped that the other three boxes would be used first most of the time. Obviously, we exercise Amedment I more than any other.

Your either crazy or you have had real bad history teachers.

The 14th Amendment largely gutted the 10th because certain states used the tenth to violate their citizens civil rights.  Illinois, California, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Hawaii are STILL using the 10th Amendment to violate their citizens rights.

The state house is NOT the individual citizens best friend.  The states that do use the 10th Amendment to increase their peoples liberty like Alaska, Vermont, and Texas are far outnumbered by those who have in the past-and continut to use it- to create little dictatorial fiefdoms.

Can you expound on this a bit?  I'm not familiar with how the 10th is being invoked in such ways.

I agree free speech is the most important Amendment, although the second Amendment secures all others.

The second, closely followed by the first.
Without these two the other are that much easier to take away.

Direct election of senators destroyed the ability of states to control the feds since senators pander to the people and not the state as they would under true federalism. Eliminate that and the 10th regains its importance

plus income tax allowed the govt to grow larger
