a perfect Manhattan splits the vermouth component into equal parts sweet and dry.

A "Perfect Manhattan" is an actual drink. It's a Manhattan with sweet and dry vermouth.
My favorite Manhattan, however, is 4:1 Borbon and sweet vermouth, a dash of bitters and a maraschino.

The perfect Martini:
Get Olives
Get Nice Gin
Get nice vermouth
Get shaker
Now throw all that shit out and drink whiskey.

The first time I had a true perfect manhatten I really understood where it got its name from. Its a beautiful thing if made properly.
