Opinions on this movie?
Am I missing something- or should I like this movie!?! |

First thing I can say is read about the comic. Don't read the comic but about it. If I remember correctly there is more drama surrounding the comic than the actual story line.
But except for Doctor Manhatten they are all just basically normal people with exceptional weirdness/abilities about them. Like if the highschool nerds made their own cosplay heroes. Also, do you even know about the 80's bro? This is a crossover world where Nixon is president during Reagans presidency. Like a mash up of hippies and yuppies. Toss in a little self reflection and that's the story. Rorschach is Pepe. |

It misses a lot from the graphic novel. It's a good movie, turn your brain off and enjoy. I wish they were able to include the story within the story and the graphic novel ending, but it's good. The movie ending made a lot more sense. |

Best movie ever, actually my favorite movie. I had never read the comic so didn't have that baggage.
I like e.g. Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy well enough, but they are like two different genres even though they're all "superhero movies". I don't know if you've noticed but seems the "jokey McJokerson" style of superhero movie seems to be more popular, and they're all veering into basically popcorn fare that is mostly comedy, and part sci-fi/comic/fantasy. That shit has it's place but so does the proverbial grimdark people like to whine about. "Where are my joaky joaks?! Not enough joaky jokes and banter in this movie!!!". Bah. |

It's a good movie, but it literally took years to hook me into watching it.
A neighbor gave me the "graphic novel " to read--and I really tried, but it was too choppy. I'm a textbook nerd, so the balloons of dialogue were annoying to me. I Started it several times, never finished it and gave it back unread. On a couple occasions I tried to watch the movie from the beginning & just found it tedious and couldn't get halfway thru. But, down the road I saw the latter half in pieces at friends houses, which finally made me want to watch it beginning to end. It's an acquired taste, but ultimately retrospective look at "heroes" with typical human issues or dysfunction, greed, lust, power, etc is interesting and became a favorite movie. As someone else once said, I think most of us have more Darth Vader than Luke Skywalker in their "soul" & identify with the human foibles of The Watchman & personality conflicts of "The Avengers" more than the ubermensch, like "Captain America" or "The Rifleman" who always does the right thing at the right time and are the upstanding hero. TL;DR--Give it a chance & you'll probably like it ETA: if you don't know what "ubermensch" means, google it. |

The director's cut is like 3 hours. Quoted:

Incredible movie! Great movie that just happens to be about super heroes and not a "superhero movie." People get hung up on Dr Manhattan's dick.... which is all of like 10 seconds of a 2.5 hr masterpiece |

I disliked it the first time I saw it, because I was expecting something else (a more traditional superhero movie: I was unfamiliar with the original story).
I caught it again randomly a couple years later, it was just on and I wasn't meaning to watch but after a few minutes....completely different reaction. I was completely blown away after watching it the second time. It isn't a "superhero" movie. It goes to the elemental nature of humanity: why we have myths about gods, celebrate heroes, what makes us human, how we find our humanity through our relationships with others, how ethics force hard choices when there are no other options, the constant nature of truth, etc... IIt is an amazing movie. |

And then there's the 3.5hr Ultimate Cut, which incorporates The Black Freighter into it. Quoted:
