Our engagement party was last Sunday, we've both been married before (a total of 50 years between the two of us; makes us sound really old doesn't it?), and we've been shopping for a ring for quite a while. She really wanted something non-traditional, and we eventually decided that we would shop for settings and stones separately.  For a stone we are looking for a very specific color (and now size, to fit the setting) sapphire (what is generally referred to as "natural ceylon blue" and 4-5 ct).

She found the setting that she really liked a few weeks ago from a custom jeweler, and she kept talking about it, so we decided that making the entire ring two separate purchases and bought the settting, with a "temporary" gemstone until we find the right sapphire so that she could wear the ring at the engagement party.

Please forgive the bad pictures; flash photography of gemstones isn't something I usually do, and we didn't have my lights and tent handy to do it right. The marks on the right side of the band are fingerprints highlighted by the flash. Eventually I'll shoot a few images properly.

For the basics, the band is platinum with 1.75 CWT of diamonds set in the band below the main stone. My fiance describes it alternately as the stone representing the bridge over the river of our past or the diamonds representing the "water under the bridge" depending on her mood

Didn't you read Tolkien?  Lawd of the rings.  (s)he who wears the ring wields all the power.  You just gave up all your power.

Be happy.  Or she'll be pissed at you.

BTW, congratulations.

I'm not really into jewelry (I don't even wear my wedding band) but that is an absolutely beautiful ring.

I shall impart the words of wisdom my own father bestowed upon me when I announced my pending marriage: "Why in the hell would you do that?"

Seriously, congrats!

Remember, "engaged" is not the same as "married."
