Those have been around for years.  The only thing new about it is digital media that will fit inside.

Hey, I could make some of those. I wonder what holds them together. If it's a light press fit, I don't see how you'd get them apart. I guess you could leave a little lip on the back part so you could get a knife in between them.

I can see only limited applications for these. To put a vaulable card in there is to invite disaster by spending or otherwise losing it.

I would imagine that this falls under the same issues as the pressed penny.

No fraudulent intent, no crime.

Treasury letter to that effect is available..............

Defacing it is not illegal so long as you are not defacing it in a manner consistent with fraud. Such as bleaching a one dollar bill and printing over it to look like a $20. Same way those rings made from per 64 half dollars are legal. As long as they were made from real currency they should be legal. If they were not then they would be counterfeit.

Might fit a hit or two of acid in there. Other than that or a micro SD card full of porn they look useless.

Defaced in this sense = changing the printed/engraved value.

I saw a "Mysteries at the Museum" episode where someone dropped a coin that broke in half.  Inside was a microfilm of a coded message.   I think they traced it to a Russian spy organization who was trying to get messages to their US agent.   They finally decoded the message and it was something along the lines of "Welcome to glorious People's Revolution Spy Agency.  This coin part of Getting Started kit, which can be use to overthrow runningdog capitalist oppressors."

It was theorized that the actual agent never knew it was a secret coin and just spent it somewhere.

I know they ruled that you're not allowed to smelt copper cent pieces once they figured out that they were worth more than one cent, in copper.

It would be WAY to easy to accidentally spend, or to lose.

Well, I was going to say that these might have been used by spies, but then this kind of a spy-fail so maybe not?

The way I heard it, in WWII, a kid got a nickel for a newspaper. He later dropped the nickel, it broke open, and in there was microfilm. FBI got involved, and they cracked a nazi spy ring.

Defacing coins is illegal.  Honestly normally not prosecuted, but became a problem when the metal in coins became worth more than their face value.
