Rig the horn with wires and a capacitor so that people get a strong static shock when they touch it. The will believe it is a real unicorn.

Well, it's going to look exactly like a REAL unicorn, it just won't have a hairy skin. It will have a horses mane, as my crazy students have already volunteered their horses tails . We are going to sculpt a horn with epoxy putty to look like a gemsbok's. We were going to buy one, but I think they can sculpt one. It will prove my point even more by doing it that way. View Quote Suggestion: historically, the "unicorn horns" displayed by adventurers were actually narwhal tusks. Since you're having the students sculpt one instead of trying to source one, you might as well go with the "historically correct fake". |

So your unicorn is going to be a donkey??? You can find more electronic components here: www.jameco.com Maybe he/she should have a motion activated Charlie-the-Unicorn voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsGYh8AacgY |

Then do a bunch of squirrels around the bottom with picket signs "Fuck you, this is art!" "End artistic suppression" and such. They can have little banners too, maybe a model of a teargas can or two.

As long as we're talking unicorns, why there aren't any around these days:

Damn, I wish I had a teacher like you when I was in school. The most exciting thing I got to do was write a paper on how we thought JFK was really killed.

I'm glad you and the kids are having fun. I'm sure it's a blast making that unicorn.
But all that aside, it's arts & crafts, not Fine Art. Taxidermy is arts & crafts. Unicorns are arts & crafts. There is actually a defined field name for this type of work: Decorative Arts. |

I am subscribed.
Another guy who wishes you would have been one of my teachers when I was in school. |

My HS art teacher was a cranky old libtard cat woman that would hiss at you.

There is actually a defined field name for this type of work: Decorative Arts. View Quote Taxidermy is sculpture. It's primary function is to be seen/experienced. Classical taxidermy used raw materials from a harvested animal. This uses artificial materials. That's no difference from sculpting with steel versus quarried stone, or painting with acrylics on board versus oil on canvas. |

So when is the fundraising drive to add another wing on the school for your projects?

Very cool project! Remember, Europeans used to think that narwhale tusks were unicorn horns. If you decide to drop the epoxy horn, you can get replica narwhale tusks on ebay.
If you are going to make a mold for the epoxy horn, check out youtube for carving a spiral in wood. I have made a couple of dirks with carved spiral handles and youtube has some good ways to lay them out easily so you get a consistent spiral. You could use the carved spiral as the plug for making your mold. You could carve it out of a sacrificial material like wax or something water soluble. Melt it out of your mold and you are ready to go. |

Apparently I'm late to this party.
When someone says, "A unicorn?????!!!", just smile and reply, "It was delicious!" |

So here is a little bit of irony..... Years ago, they have had state wide contests for students and schools to finish these animal form sculptures. They provide a fiberglass shell/form to be painted, or decorated in any way they choose. They were judged at the State Art contest, and celebrated by showing them off in their own part of the show. Most were just painted. Some had texture added, and then there was ours.... It's exactly the same as what we are doing with the Unicorn, but we are using a foam taxidermy form instead. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4421/36071124564_36c0c2a2af_h.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4398/36071117004_c5f9e47724_h.jpg Notice the "oil" pouring out of the fish in the sides. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4419/36071124714_8590f1babc_h.jpg We used deer eyes for the fish. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4437/36071116714_decb6c224b_h.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4350/36905406325_44856f83d5_h.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4333/36765685701_0575a520b1_h.jpg View Quote |
