I am fascinated by sturgeon. I caught a small Lake Sturgeon in the St-Laurence River about 5 years ago. It was the only one I've ever caught. This is an awesome book about them: ![]() The Philosopher Fish: Sturgeon, Caviar, and The Geography of Desire TannerB, What exactly are you studying? I always thought I'd end up as a freshwater biologist studying fish. That's what I wanted to do when I was a kid. |
We caught many like this on this particular day. They are a blast on salmon gear! |
Sorry didn't see this, Im a Wildlife Biology major, so this is just part of the core cirruculum. Im going to be a game warden when I get out. |
Awesome! Sturgeon are about the coolest fish on the planet. Most species don't reach sexual maturity until they're 25 years old! This is the massive Lake Sturgeon I caught: ![]() I found the email address for fisheries biologist at the Ministry of Natural Resources (Canada) and corresponded with him. He was the one that told me it was a Lake Sturgeon. They used to be plentiful in the St-Laurence River but overfishing has taken a toll on them. If you're interested in them, you would really like the book. It goes into a lot of the history of the fish. Really neat stuff. California has sturgeon fish farms and that's a big source for caviar in the U.S. I was actually fishing for eels and walleye in about 30 feet of water when I caught the above juvenile. I hooked in the edge of the mouth and kept it out of the water only long enough to snap a few pictures before letting it go. I've caught all kinds of fish, but that was one of the most exciting fishing experiences I have ever had. My dad and I had a running joke for years about 'catching a sturgeon'. It happened on September 7, 2001. |
That is great! Don't be shy about enforcing fish and game laws. The only thing between poachers and fish/game is you. I went on a moose hunt in northern NH a few years ago. The game wardens were all over us! We passed some hunters who had shot a moose close enough to the road that the game warden had a tape measure out to see if the distance was legal. I never found out how it turned out. It's very easy to deplete freshwater fish stocks. I saw it happen in Canada in the area I grew up. Overfishing with no enforcement of the fishing laws because they spend the fishing and hunting license money on welfare up there. |
