Right now, I'm enjoying a nice rootbeer float. Just using cheap A&W, but regardless it prompted me to make a thread about rootbeer. What is your favorite rootbeer? I think Henry Weinhard and Jones are pretty good. But I'd love to hear other opinions. |

Take an empty one or two liter soda bottle, rinse it out with bleach solution, let that dry and gas off.
Mix Zatarains rootbeer extract, water, sugar, and champagne yeast per the bottle instructions or some rough approximation thereof. Put bottles on top of the fridge to fulminate until they are so firm you wonder whether they're quite safe. Place in fridge. When cold, drink. Best if you kill the bottle in one sitting, they go flat pretty quick, but it's damn good. There are other brands of extract out there but I prefer the old timey zatarains. |

Boylan's Creamy Red Birch Beer is my favorite.
I used to enjoy Snapple's clear "Tru Root Beer" but that hasn't been made for a while now. ETA Stewart's is OK but I don't feel it is significantly better than anything else -- certainly miss the Stewart's hot dog stands, though. |

Quoted: IBC Hires Stewarts ...in no particular order. IF!!! you are old enough to remember, the all time leader is MOXIE. So strong, you almost needed a prescription. A man's root beer. Consumed volumes as a kid in the 50's and 60's. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VWP0VS/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687702&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001684NNU&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0Z1G7430TBP0F1VWKKJ1 |

Quoted: Just a question for the guys who know alot about the 19th century, in the old west. Didn't they drink sarsaparilla back then? and is Root beer actually another name for sarsaparilla? Sarsaparilla and root beer are made from the roots of native North American plants. Both originated as tonics and were highly prized for their medicinal value. Sarsaparilla is made from the sarsaparilla vine, while root beer was originally made from the roots of the sassafras tree. Modern root beers do not contain sassafras because of potential health risks of the plant. |
