I'm looking for way to cut floor tile that is already installed. I would like to cut 1/2" off a row of tile that butts up against a wall, I'm laying baseboard and would prefer to go behind the tile rather than over it.

I have a 2.5" wheel cutter but it is to big to work close to the wall and a dremel is too much work, I would like to be done sometime this century. Anyone know of a good way to go about this?

Honestly I think there is no good way to accomplish this without breaking the area of the tile you are trying to leave. Even of you do manage to get the tile cut you still will have to deal with getting it loose from the mastic it was installed with. Dremel would prob be the best bet but there will be a good amount of dust and you will go through a ton of cutting wheels. If you don't mind me asking why do you want the trim behind the tile?

No kidding--that's not how it's done.

I did flooring for eight years - vinyl & tile, exclusively.

Sorry. That's not the way it's done. Trim always goes on top - unless you're cutting the tile to fit.

I can think of no reasonable reason to try to do what you want to try, either.

I don't mean to be an ass.

If that's what you really want to do - good luck.

Yeah I know, it is kind of an odd situation! The house I recently bought has the tile running up to the baseboard and grout in between, so I guess the tile came after.

I am working on the dining room and I modified a pony wall so it is now flush with an existing wall. I want to run continous baseboard ffrom the dining room (existing baseboard) around the pony wall which has none. The tile runs right up to the pony wall. The only wall I can see to do it is to cut a recess for the tile or to rip the baseboard down so it is the same height as the existing baseboard.

I hope that is clear, I think I can dig up a pic or two.

I would probably just cut down the baseboard to be flush with the other stuff.

The sheet rock doesn't cover the grout line?

If not, I'd probably just rip the base board to fit. Or, I'd put something behind the drywall - so it does.

It it does, already, I'd shoot a nice, thin, line of caulk along the bottom of the wall. Done.

While you could try and cut the with an angle grinder and a diamond wheel, the edge is very unlikely to be good enough for a 'show' edge.

Rip the baseboard down.
Wood is much easier to cut down then already layed tiles.

the only tool for the job is a fein multimaster but I personally would just rip the baseboard as necessary

It works great, this kit comes with more tools worth ALOT more than the $49 bucks more this cost over the $100 kit. You may want to buy an extra blade. You also need to use and shop vac and vacuum to pick up the dust WHILE you are cutting.

Any manually guided tile cut over more than a short distance is NOT going to be clean enough for a show edge.

Holy crap.  I know that house.  It isn't in Palm Coast is it?

I'm going to go with ripping down the baseboards, I'll post pics when I'm done. Also will be squaring off that weird angular door header you can see in the first pic.

I'm in Broward County, not Palm Coast, but it is possible the same builder did both.

Good plan.  Probably no visitor will ever look closely enough to tell it wasn't originally installed that way.

FYI, I just removed some baseboards and ripped an angle on the backside to hide my rear channel speaker wires.  I put the project off for three years.....
