Finally joined the 21st century yesterday with a Samsung Galaxy S II.
Downloaded a flashlight app, a compass, bubble level, radar, a couple of games. Tried to download the 'tricorder' but something is not set up properly for payment. What's an app that you can't live without? TRG |

TuneIn Radio lets you pick up streams of radio stations across the county.
Also go here http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b?ie=UTF8&node=2350149011 and download the appstore from Amazon. Every day Amazon gives away a paid application for free. Yesterday they gave away a copy of OfficeSuite Pro 5 which is normally $15. SeekDroid is a great paid application that allows you to locate you phone if it is lost or stolen. You can force the phone to turn on the GPS remotely, see recent calls and track the phone. You can also lock the phone down and even remote wipe. Great program and service. Finally, Chrome to Phone give you a browser plug-in in Chrome that allows you to send webpages directly to your phone. |

Google Maps Weather Channel WiFi Analyzer Firefox (Syncs with FF on my Desktop/Laptop) Amazon Kindle Amazon App Store (Free App a day is sometimes good) AutoCAD WS Astro File Manager RealCalc (RPN Baby!) That's the VERY short list. I use the hell out of this app at work, mainly for working in hex and octal. Although I can not stand and do not use RPN, even though I own about four HP calcs..... |

Root the phone and install either UnNamed 1.0.4 ROM or Serendipity 8.1.
Serendipity 8.1 will increase the battery life significantly. If you want to know how to root...I can help. As for apps...

| If you misplace your phone alot the "where's my droid" app is a good one. All you have to do is send "where's my droid "from another phone and it will start ringing on loud no matter what your phone setting is at. Also you can send "gps my droid" and it will turn on your gps and send you the phones gps location. i've lost my serval times and this app has saved my ass! |

Oh yeah... Google Sky Map is super cool. Gauge battery widget. AVG Anti-virus seemed like a good idea as well. TRG Theoretically, you shouldn't need the anti virus, at least in my experience you shouldn't. Don't download third party no name apps, stick to the Android Market or Amazon App Store and you'll be alright. Most of the freebie apps I use are nice-to-haves, not absolutely essential but they make things easier. I use AudioManager for setting volume for different things, mostly because for some stupid reason the audible tones on my Droid X would intermittently not work. Since installing AudioManager, all my tones and everything work flawlessly. ColorNote is nice for jotting quick reminders and such down. ConvertPad, convert most any unit into another unit. Some guys use Firefox, some use the stock Android browser, I think Opera has an Android browser too, I use Dolphin. DroidLight and EBay, both self explanatory there. GasBuddy uses Google Maps to check gas prices in your area and lists them, although I don't use it all that much. Lightning Bug and Relax and Sleep are about the only ways I can get to sleep when I'm traveling. Pandora Radio, don't use this if you don't have an unlimited data plan. Serious data hog. Speedtest, self explanatory. Weather Channel Waepedia, all the various wikis in one app. Paid for stuff I use that's extremely useful: ADW Launcher EX (about $3). I think the stock Motoblur launcher on my phone sucks. ADW is much more pleasing to the eye, infinitely more customizable, and I think it's faster. Beautiful Widgets (also about $3). Neat weather widgets, battery monitoring thingies, on/off switches for wireless, bluetooth, etc. Easy Tether Pro (I think this one was about $5 from the Amazon App Store). Tether through USB to the phone so I have an internet connection with my laptop. Not very fast, but it's serviceable. I didn't tell you this, but if you're adventurous you can root your phone and download a wireless tether app that'll let you do this for free, but cell carriers are catching on to this and may fuss at you or throttle your connection down if they catch you doing this excessively. Tasker (um, $3-4 from the Android Marketplace). Very powerful, but kinda complicated app when you're first playing with it. Lets you create profiles for various operating states on your phone, adjust power consumption, turn things on and off for specific times/conditions/locations/battery levels/etc. Those are probably the ones I use the most anyways. |

Advanced task killer (task manager) Juice defender (battery manager) Angry Birds Pandora (free radio) Score center (ESPN score app) Words free (scrabble) IMO, this app is pointless for our phones. I could understand if we had less ram. Stock app does well enough. |

Scanner Radio is really neat. You can hear real time police and EMS radio chatter from a multitude of locations. Chicago at night is pretty entertaining.
Rockplayer Lite if you want to play some avi, mpg, wmv, etc files. Nothing stacks up to Penguins vs. Zombies though. |

I think it's an okay app if you use it then kill it, where a lot of folks get in trouble is letting it run continuously in the background. But yes, Android does a fine job on its own managing power and apps. |

Free for me too, but a battery killer like no other. -Netflix -Adobe reader / Flash player 11 -Craigslist Mobile -DropBox - Google Earth / Maps -Google translate -History Eraser -Lookout Security -Photobucket Mobile -Radar Now -Shush! ringer restorer - WebMD for Android - WiFi analyzer I had a shit load more installed, but if you overload the thing you increase the risk of incompatibility which will lead to functional instability. My wife lots of games and her phone exhibits erratic behavior when she gets carried away with the downloads. If she removes them, the phone goes back to being normal. |

Task killers do nothing on newer androids. HTC phones already come with a ton of excellent widgets, no need to enhance the UI either on those, it's already the best one. HTC comes with a ton of apps already and the car panel with all the best google nav stuff already loaded and incredible(pun intended) clock and alarm apps/widgets. They are by far the best phones out of the box. So I don't know most of the UI enhancement apps, never needed them. +1 on a bunch including Wifi Analyzer Weather Channel RealCalc SpeedTest Scanner Radio Pandora Sirius Online Foxnews app Lightning bug Google Sky map GPS staus Compass Congress app-this is a great app Constitution Declaration of independence Bubble Level(amazingly accurate and handy) Easy Tether(the only one I paid for, $9 well spent, makes a $200 netbook a pretty handy tool) Conversion Pad(absolute MUST have) Google Translate Google stocks Battery gauge widget A good flashlight LED app if you don't have one included with the phone bar code scanner can't remember most of them, plenty of cool retro camera apps and other stuff Oh, and of course Old Man Herbert sound board... Guess whooo I'm very widget-centric, there are hardly any shortcuts on any of the 7 pages that do not warrant immediate use. Put all the goofy junk in folders on one window/page, I have four folders for resources, funny/goofy, tools, and shopping that contain about 40 apps consolidate to 4 shortcuts. ETA: Crap I keep remembering other ones |

Gas Buddy - Check gas prices Battery Solo Widget - Battery level meter widget, 1x1 Raindar - Radar app that uses Wundermap data from wunderground.com ElectroDroid - cool electronics app Cargo Decoder - Placard decoder Flight Aware - track aircraft Barcode Scanner 3G Watchdog - Keep track of your data if you dont have an unlimited plan Wheres My droid: Phone finder app Wifi Analyzer Web MD Easy Reminder - reminds you if havent checked your text messages |

Anybody know the name of the widget, shortcut, or application that gives you the small green toolbar used for turning on/off the driving mode?
I was rearranging my homescreen and deleted the icon and can't find the name in my lists of apps/widgets to add it to a different screen. TRG |

FYI if you have a windows 7 netbook tethering is built in to android. You only need the app for xp. There should be an icon for car mode, Press and hold and you should be able to drag/drop the icon wherever you want. I've looked, can't find it. This was a small toolbar (green and black) that had two other icons grouped (Voice and Voice talk?) TRG |
