My car search took a detour into the Comfort Class of automobile. The ones that seem to fit my needs best so far are the 09+ Acura RL and the Lincoln Towncar. The RL is unobtanium in the pricerange I want, so we're not talking about it. The great driver's seat in the Towncar -- is it the same as the one in the Grand Marquis? I found an 08 Towncar w/ 32k & clean personal-vehicle carfax for $17900. Is it worth spending another $2000 for a 10 w/ 42.7k and a rental history? When I see pictures of the trunks of Towncars, why is the carpeted panel across the top on the inside (covers lift motor and springs) always hanging down like it was ripped out and put back with duct tape? How hard / expensive is it to put a tow hitch on one of these? I'm not thinking C3/4... just something strong enough to hole a single or double motorcycle trailer.

Have you actually ridden/driven in the newest gen towncar? I can't speak for others, but I have and couldn't stand it. The suspension was too floaty (it was like the car was riding on pillow cushions). So much so that it made me Nauseous. This is something you should take into account. |

An actual test drive is my next order of business. I understand that the air ride is not as 'connected' to the road as other types. It may prove to be a deal killer, but right now my main priorities in this kind of car are a smooth, quiet ride and how comfortable I can get in the seat. If the Grand Marquis seats are similar, I'm all over buying the less expensive vehicle. (but the power trunk on the TC is just cool Fun driving will quite likely be covered by a motorcycle... I just went down and had the M added to my license yesterday, so I'm one step closer. ;-) |

The air ride is fine, many generations of Ford/Lincoln/Mercury big cars and suv's have used them. The biggest problem with air suspension is when people continue to drive them with leaking air bags. A little understanding of how the system works would prevent small repairs from becoming a major expense. With a leaking air bag the pump will run longer than it was designed to which eventually causes it to seize. If the leaking air bag is replaced in a timely manner the system would continue to function for years without major problems...saving a lot of.time and money in the processoe.
