Unless it warms up I dont not think I will be running my first half marathon of the season on March 19th. So I have been doing some thinking and entering a Trail Marathon. They have a half marathon available too, so thats what I will do. Here is a link to the site. Its at the Pickney recreation area in Michigan. I think someone said he did one of these at this park. Just looking for some thoughts.

I know how I feel during running the handful of marathons I've done over the past few years...  I cannot imagine running them on a trail...  After 20 miles, I am shuffling my feet, instead of running a typical stride.  That shuffling could be near impossible on a trail.

April in Michigan...  those trails are likely to be wet, sloppy and mucky.  Your footing will likely be terrible.

Be careful and be sure to train on trails.  If possible, run the race course during training, to familiarize yourself with what to expect.

Good luck!

ETA - if I wasn't already signed up for a 10 mile race in Cleveland that day, I'd be making the drive up there for this.  From the pictures on the website, it looks like a great place to try a trail marathon...  even if you only decide to do the half...

Sixgun:  if you do decide to run it, let us know how it goes.  I'm particularly interested because after I do my 10K I want to start trail running.

By the way I bought the book The Ultimate Guide to Trail Running which I found useful.

I've never done a marathon.  but trail marathon sounds like tons of hard work.
