Oops. CanPac (and UP IIRC) used to have snowthrowers that looked like your driveway clearer got fucked by the Hulk during a radioactive isotope storm. These things had impellers the size of a station wagon, and can throw snow a couple of hundred feet. My dad said they sounded like the noise from a DC-3. |
Locomotives usually have "sand boxes" where the engineer can apply a dusting of sand to assist with traction when the rails are iced. I assume it would be a combo of sanding and maybe a tow cable to a few locos on the clear track behind. |

Locomotives have sand on board. Since metal on metal sucks for traction, adding sand helps a lot. Only thing is, the wheels have to roll over the sand. They wont drag the sand under the wheel. Seen this done in MN. Theyll add a few more locomotives to the train and pull it out. You can see right before he hits the snow the black puff from the rear engine. The two fronts didnt puff too much. The engineer didnt bring the speed up soon enough. Takes a few seconds to bring the rpms of those big deisels up. EMD usually keeps the max rpm to 870-890 rpm at full boogie.
We had one where I work. "small" turbine engine. Doesnt melt as much as blow the tracks clean. Melting = frozen switches = not good. |
