And I kicked my own ass day 1.

Walked around the neighborhood for a couple hours with a camping pack full of books, probably 40ish lbs. Everything was fine, felt great afterward ready to do it again. I'm in pretty good shape, was an amateur bodybuilder for a few years. But the weak link is showing itself, the one part we don't train. FEET.

The next day I ended up with a splitting nerve-type pain on the metatarsal area that shoots through the toes whenever I put pressure on the balls of my feet. It's the day following and the pain is still pretty annoying. It's not debilitating pain or anything but it feels like a nerve thing so it's hard to put weight on it. It will be fine for 100 paces and then, out of nowhere, bang.

I used to get low back pain so I switched to a good insole. It worked great for the low back pain and plantar fascitis. Aside from getting new insoles (already done it), anybody have any tips for lessening this?

I'm going to be expected to carry this weight every day for months, so I need to train up to it if I want to make it.

ETA: I just got back from REI. Picked up the orange superfeet with the metatarsal support, and they feel pretty good. Guess I'll just have to wait and see...

as long as you can knock out 2 miles and 30 pushups and situps you should be fine. Most people that enlisted with me were way out of shape. Its good on you for getting into shape before you go in. I did the same thing and basic is easier because of it.

Mental prep might be the most important.  That shock from the first day and maybe days will be the worst thing to worry about.  Just be prepared for a shock and you will be fine.  You'll be surprised how quickly you become numb to yelling.  It'll be the longest time of your life while youre in it, but after its over it'll seem like it flew by.  It's not bad, alot of the stuff is fun (mainly rifle quals).  Keep a good attitude, laugh at the bad stuff (not out loud), and have fun.

Just keep up with your BB workout and just start doing some cardio.  you will be surprised how easy Basic Training is physically.  If you show up in shape, you will be better off than 95% of recruits.  Don't be surprised if you loose size and strength as the work outs wont be any where near as strenuous as a hard BB work out.  At least it was like that for me in the AF.

Good Luck Bro.
