I got hired by the local Transit Authority to do security. We run a mixed crew of off duty police, deputies and security officers. The long term plan is to transition to a transit police situation. Does anyone know where I might find what the requirements are for a group making this transition? I know we are governed by an authority that has to do a balancing act between Federal, State and Local laws. Any help is appreciated. CS |
I guess it depends what transit system it is and if it's Gov. or private. NYC Transit police were a security guard force in the begining. Then they became Special Patrolman. Then a seperate tri-STATE transit dept. And eventually merged with NYPD. |
I am guessing this is the route we will follow but there is no talk yet of merging with the Tulsa Police Department. We have no real Special Patrolman category here in Oklahoma. |
Nothing against what you are doing, but having formerly lived in Ok for 8 years and starting my LE career there, I don't think Ok has the justification for this ...yet. Ok needs to greatly expand the public transportation network before this is even attempted. There is a lack of availability of trains, buses etc. compared to other states that do have Transit Police. Have you looked into Amtrak P.D.? They don't pay much, but the cost of living is a lot lower in Ok and you should be okay with the pay. |
CS, not to disagree, but the Transit Police were not special patrolmen, nor a tri-state transit department(unless you are talking about the Rapid Transit Police). NYC Transit Police were a Federally funded, State & City guidelined police force. They went to similar and then the same academy as NYPD and eventually the city was able to incorporate them into the department and get the federal funds for their treaure chest. The same situation happened with NYC Housing PD. |
It looks like we may have rail in the next few years. Right now our transit stations are a full time job for a few of us. The pay on this is already better than some PD's in the area. Looks like it may be worth sticking with for a bit to see. |
I think that was PARA-KIMBER, I was just quoteing. |
