Thinking about swapping my 2013 F150 2door extended cab (half reverse opening doors on rear) for a full 4 door.

My truck has 35k miles on it, 4x4, XLT with the 5.0 and 36 gallon tank (highly underrated option).

Requirements:
1/4 or 1/2 ton.
V8 or Diesel
4x4
4 Door

----

Probably going with a 2016 new (year ending deal).
Prefer a shorter bed with going to a crew cab.

Like to stay under 40k

Hemi Rams so far seem to have the most bang for the buck.  Not opposed to any brand.

I don't even know why people buy 2 door trucks nowadays. They make 4 doors with long beds if you really need the extra cargo space.

Sounds like you have a solid truck, why get rid of it?

If you want to get a new Diesel that is 4x4 quad cab etc. you are going to have a hard time keeping it under 40k....

I am not an expert, but from what I have read it seems like all of the current gen diesels are pretty good.  I have a 2001 Ford Super duty 4x4 with the 7.3.  The one thing I don't like about it is that it's a regular cab

I bought it used last year, and I got a really good price.  I think part of the reason I got a good price is that it's not a quad cab.  People just don't want 2 seater trucks anymore.  It's also a manual transmission which may have knocked the price down as well.

I did the same thing with my first Titan.  Wanted more room in the cab and the 4 full doors.  Ended up getting another Titan in the Pro-4X trim.  I'm not sold on the newer body style they went to, but my current 2010 has done everything I have needed it to for 126K miles even with the shorter bed.

Pain in the ass with a 2 year old, 4 door, not half doors would make things simpler.  And a little more room in the cab.

Its been great to me, 4 wheel drive has been handy the few times I've used it, average 16mpg.  I live 3 miles from work so gas mileage isn't a thought.

2011-2016 ford superduty short beds only come with a 26 gallon fuel tank.

I just picked up a 2014 f250 4x4 diesel with under 30,000 on the clock for not too much over $40,000 it's the lariat package with all the goodies. I found a ton of Xlt's with 20,000 miles or so on them for under $40,000

I just picked up a 2016 F150 XLT Supercrew 4x4 Sport package, moon roof, locking rear diff. Got it for 12k off or MSRP.

I know you said you want a V8 but I wouldn't discount the Ecoboost engines. I was skeptical until I test drove it.

There are plenty of 2016 RAM quad cab Hemi and diesel options in the pipeline for $32000-42000.  All you need to do is know where to look. Since I have been shopping for the same, I just looked to see plenty  of very low mileage trucks in inventory.

Keep in mind that Fiat Chrysler had to buy back 500000 units in a class action settlement, so there are some questions you need to ask about how they repaired the recall issues.

It almost makes me want to shop for a Chevy.   (My 2012 was recalled and purchased back)

Trucks are plentiful to be found.  Ram seems to have the best bang for the buck.

Let's see if this link works for you:

New trucks:

http://www.tempeautoplex.com/new-inventory/index.htm?listingConfigId=auto-new&year=2016&make=Ram&model=&bodyStyle=Truck+Crew+Cab&internetPrice=&driveLine=&highwayMpg=&engine=&trim=&start=0&sort=&facetbrowse=true&searchLinkText=SEARCH&showFacetCounts=true&showRadius=false&showSubmit=true&showSelections=true

It kills me the last three of these I purchased were year-end and they were all less than $24K for 4x4 quad cab Hemi trucks.  If my employment were a bit more secure, I would already have another of these.

I have had four of them now.  No issues at all.  Are you like that other guy, that doesn't even drive, trying to tell people what is good?  Bernie lover?

3/4 ton Chevy. 1/2 ton Ford or Chevy. I would skip dodge unless you can find a screaming deal on one.

MM,
With the kid, you will be much happier with a full 4 door.
I had an extra cab version with the suicide doors, and you can barely get kids in/out of the truck when you are in a parking lot.

If I "had" to buy a truck right now, it would be a Ford Ecoboost V6 in Super Cab. It is a beast with power and very roomy/comfy inside.
However, I might wait to get the 2017 model year. I understand Ford has "fixed" some of the turbo problems on the Ecoboosts for 2017.

It is hard getting rid of a good truck, but now is likely the time to get the most out of the trade in.
Post pics if you get a new one

Good luck

Yup, getting a toddler in and out of the suicide doors is the main reason.  We take my truck everywhere (wife's care is a Ford Edge, I really don't like it).

I've had multiple copies of each(GM, Ford and Ram) over the past 20 years, probably 2 dozen or so trucks.  I like all 3 brands, they're all very good at making trucks. I also agree with you that Ram currently offers the most for the money.

Before you buy anything, go drive them all, including getting th car seat in and out of them..then figure out who the best dealer is and finally what the best deal is...I have found I dont mind paying a lot for anything I truly like..but can't stand paying anything for something I dont like...payment wise...

Interesting. I have the suicide doors and love them, but I have my first kid on the way.....Is this a reason to get a new truck I want to upgrade to a 3/4 diesel anyways because we pull a 28ft camper. I also use the bed for runs to the dump, gravel, mulch, and tubing. I want a long bed, but I don't want a 4 door with long bed and a truck that is 20ft long pulling a 28ft camper. Not ideal......or is it?

ETA: what about the shorter back doors you see on the 3/4 GMC and Chevys as far as baby, toddler, kids?

Congrats on the kid :)

It keeps getting more and more annoying with the suicide doors.
