Ok, so i am looking to buy a truck here within the next month or two. I want to stay under $4000, and am not looking for anything new. I am kinda torn between a slightly older Chevy Silverado 1500 and a slightly old Ford Ranger.
Now my first question is: How good is the Chevy on gas and how good is the Ford on gas? I know neither one is going to be amazing on gas or anything like that, but compared to the Dodge Durango w/ a Hemi that im driving now, just about anything will be better. As for my other question: Would a 5 speed in either truck make the gas mileage any better or no? -Tig |

I'm not an expert on either truck, so idk for sure what size ill need.
im going to be helping my uncle out quite a bit with hauling cut up trees and what not, and then commuting back and forth to work, which is roughly 30 miles each way. does anybody have a rough estimate on what the mileage is for both vehicles? |

Yes, if you drive it correctly the manual will do better. |

Full size trucks and good mileage are polar opposites. The best and worst (with similarly sized drivetrains) will probably be 2-3 mpg of eachother. Not enough to be a factor in your choice. That type of gain matters to manufacturers trying to meet CAFE standards, not to you...
Going to the ranger can give you a significant gain in MPG, but it's a different class of vehicle alltogether. |

88-95 C1500 about 14-16MPG
88-95 K1500 12-15MPG (4WD Kills Mileage) 96-99 C1500 16-19MPG 96-99 K1500 14-17MPG Ranger 4 Cyl 18-22 Ranger 6 Cyl 17-20 I've actually owned all of the above and currently have a 95 K1500 getting 18.5 on avg. with some ECM tuning and a little bolt on BS (350cid, 4L60E, Z71, 33" tires, and 3.73 gears with a lock-rite) |
