WASHINGTON, Sept 11 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Friday he would not oppose Chinese automakers building cars in the United States despite widespread opposition from U.S. lawmakers and car companies. "If China wanted to come in and open a plant to build their cars here, I'd be okay with that," Trump said in an interview on the Fox News program "The Ingraham Angle." "Japan does it, but they hire our people. The big thing is they hire our people," he said. He added that he does not want Chinese automakers to build cars in Mexico and ship them to the United States. "I'm not knocking Chinese cars," Trump said. U.S. automakers have urged Trump, who is due to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington in two weeks, not to agree to allow Chinese automakers access to the U.S. market. On Wednesday, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, said there were "rumors that Trump is planning to allow Chinese cars to be sold in the U.S., as part of a larger deal he’s putting together. That would be a strategic mistake." Trump called Slotkin's statement a "total phony rumor" and said he had kept Chinese vehicles out of the United States. A regulation imposed by former President Joe Biden's administration in early 2025 effectively bans all Chinese automakers from selling or building passenger vehicles in the U.S. Washington also maintains more than 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. Last week, a group representing nearly all major automakers urged Congress to quickly pass legislation permanently barring Chinese vehicles from the U.S. market. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents General Motors , Ford , Toyota , Volkswagen , Hyundai , Honda , Stellantis and others, called for passage of the bill by the end of December. "Right now, Chinese automakers are dumping subsidized vehicles with connected software and hardware around the world," the group's CEO, John Bozzella, said in a letter to congressional leaders. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-says-he-would-be-ok-with-china-building-cars-us-2026-09-12/ |

BE a great, big FUCK YOU to the auto industry and mostly to the National Auto Dealers Association, which has been swinging its big, protected dick around since the 1920s. Fuck those guys. Although the Chinese would wreck some companies, it would force these lazy, slow, stupid car makers and possibly the World's Shittiest Politicians to figure out how to be less sucky at their jobs. Creative destruction. |

Creative destruction. Just so you know - Elon Musk hasn't figured it out so far. Tesla sales in China have been falling over the past few years. If you think US automotive execs are smarter then he is, and will figure it out ... I admire your optimism. Personally, I figure they will sell all the assets to the Chinese while the assets are still worth something. You'll be driving a "Buick", designed and 50% made in Shanghai, CN. |

It would be interesting to see the final cost of a Chinese - but built in the US car vs a domestic companies US built car. In theory the Chinese ome would be subject to tarrifs on all the parts they bring in from China and would also be paying American wages (unless its full of H1B chinese slave workers) |
| This is more a question of all the spy shit that they put inside the car to listen to you to watch your face to record every conversation you’re having and see everything that the camera see on millions of cars on the road. If they know that John Del works for the FBI they can tap his car and listen and see everything he sees. That Hungwei operating system is simply an espionage network. |

That means we transition to Chinese style capitalism/communism, since their companies are state backed, are we OK with that? Trump does seem to be OK with that considering the US Government buying stakes into key companies. The worst part of that question is the American taxpayer subsidizes that, since good ol' Bill Clinton accepted China into the WTO. The biggest mistake in American history in the last 50 years. The transition seems inevitable at this point. State backed capitalism... invites oligarchies and cronyism.. which seems like already exists. |

It depends. The threat of Chinese cars is how cheap they are. But if it's Chinese companies building factories here and hiring Americans and paying US taxes, then the cars will not have a cost advantage over anyone else. If it happens that way, it wont be a problem. If it happens the Canadian way, where dirt cheap Chinese cars are imported and sold for pennies, it will be a disaster. |

I beileve it is BVD(China) that will begin selling in Canada in about 6 months. Canada is in the process of testing their cars for Canadian safety standards and whatever. Not sure what tariffs will be. China is ordering like 6/8 container ships that can carry around 8k cars. Not a big fan of buying China, but I stopped in most cases, looking at where my purchases are made. Except for TVs, I beileve my LG, which I bought a few years ago, was made in S. Korea. One thing's for sure: China is way ahead in most cases in its ECS and infrastructure. Looking for a high trim used Tesla, Kia, Hyundai, and maybe Rivian for my first EC. I just do not know anymore. The used and new auto market is way overpriced. The last car I bought was a 2013 Ford Taurus police with 44k miles and low hours for around 10k. It drives and sounds great. Still going to buy an ice truck for towing < 10k. ![]() CONFIRMED: BYD’s 2027 Canada Lineup Is Insane (Top 5 Cars) ![]() Canadians, get your money ready! All about BYD vehicle prices in Canada |

Originally Posted By SamuelAdams1776: Does that mean Americans can go to China, build factories and sell products in China? Since nascent policy changes in the late 70s spurred some mfg entry. The deal was "voluntary" in the 80s. Foreign companies "chose" to partner with local Chinese mfg in a Joint Venture. VW and AMC Jeep (Jeep always traveled well) were in at the start. VW with SAIC (a State Owned Enterprise [SOE] - in this case own by Shanghai Municipality). AMC was BAIC. They formed Beijing Jeep Company and the Chinese Military got a new "Jeep". This is an aspect that is important. Later the Chinese Govt - Read: CCP - stopped pretending and required any foreign entry into the market to be through Chinese Jiont Venture Partners. This entitled capital ties up, local mfg bases (not merely CKD assembly facilitie) and most importantly - explicit technology transfers. Not merely "here's some design blueprints" but process, controls, financing and production..R&D facilities. The entire Ecosystem was created by foreign entities, who are now being forced to sell, out of abandon their JV stakes. China cares little as little is left to steal. In '22 since China has too much auto mfg capacity and too many mfgs, China cut the JV requirement for new on soil production in '22. Tesla and Lexus bit. As mentioned that's a mixed bag that will likely work out poorly. Recent, the trend is targeting SOE JVs into merger. Forcing a defacto reduction in foreign ownership and foreign market share. https://www.thestar.com.my/business/business-news/2026/09/17/auto-industry-finally-moves-to-tackle-glut Rather than trying to force a shotgun marriage between competing carmakers backed by rival local governments a strategy that's failed before China appears to be targeting foreign-brand joint ventures for consolidation, which makes any production cuts more palatable to domestic stakeholders. This way, both state-owned enterprises (SOE) remain independent while trimming capacity. So all the bitching about Detroit, mfgs, NADA and protections. Bitches, you ain't seen nothing yet, ![]() BTW - The Toyota LC J70 is a shit truck for the States that's more industrial tool than excellent passenger vehicles. As our member from Oz once quipped, 'Great for Cockies and Stockman, not something normal people buy much'. But forbidden fruit is the sweetest. You can import front coil 3rd Rev now. They havnt changed hardly at all since. Import to your hearts content. FWIW I hate Mercedes and their lobbying that git use here. But turns out, private import isn't what it used to be. The threat isn't cheap, the threat is Chinese CCP control. Thats not a fairy tale. The aspect of Civil-Military Fusion embodied in National Defense Mobilization Law isn't even slightly hidden. | They’re already here buying and building manufacturing plants in different sectors, just not automotive. Somehow they’re gaming our stupid system by claiming to be Taiwanese, but they’re still Chinese and the CCP owns the operation. Our stupid paid off politicians do everything possible to grease the skids for them to get that good old CCP kickback money. The level of corruption is astounding. Selling our corrupt politicians the rope that’ll hang us all, and the politicians are too stupid to realize that includes them and their posterity. |

The Koreans came here and used a bunch of illegal Koreans to assemble their plants and kept them on working till the state busted them. This was all after getting huge tax breaks for agreeing to hire locally. A local I know had his old chicken houses rented out and turned into classrooms to train Koreans how to weld, wire, etc. when the SK Battery plant was going up. |

The construction was kinda framed by bullshit pledges. Development always promises and mostly delivers little that isn't tied down with disincentives. Some of those peeps were here on marginal visas, some were straight up fraud. Many were dedicated Hyundai and affiliate/partner employees who globally handle build out and start up. What could have been local tho, wasn't very much from what I've seen. If I recall correctly in the MetaPlant Raid thread, you've seen more. That said it's how American companies have done biz overseas for a century. If GA wanted the development phase jobs localized, they shoulda tied it up. This gets laid at the feet of GDEcD - and JDA to an extent. Im not defending Korea Motors. They've some bad habits all around. But peeps are as loyal to their word, as they are held financially - contractually - responsible. Those 8500 Fulltime jobs by 2031 and I think 100% retention for 15 years is tied hard to the tax/subsidy structure. Whether or not GA had the sophistication to do it correctly and the will to enforce, we'll see. Ohio - Honda and Indiana - Isuzu/Subie, later Honda and Toyota did it mostly right early. But States held more cards then and southern states have been more aggressive due to economic expansion goals. Probably still a good deal for GA, - and Eggingham, Bryan, Bulloch, and Chatham counties. Will know in about 20 years. |
