With all this talk about the Tsunami, the tragedy, the cost and relief efforts I have a question for you.  Do you even care?
12/30/2004 6:46:08 AM EDT
[#1]
Over 100,000 people died due to a natural disaster.  There are so many individual horror stories that you cannot help but care.

I just hate how the Tsunami Story has become another avenue for some to vent their hatred for the United States of America

There are MANY who lost their lives in that natural disaster for whom I mourn.  There are some who lost their lives for whom I celebrate the loss.

Glad you have no compassion.  We have a natural disaster that 100,000+ people have died in.

I bet if your family was killed right now you would be singing a different tune.

If 20,000+ of your countrymen and women died, I bet you would desire some assistance.

I feel bad for the people that are suffering.  I do not find myself wishing this on people.  Who sent us aid on 9-11-01?  Who sends aid when California has earthquakes?  The world thinks we should have been there handing out food and cash before the second wave hit.  I say let the French or maybe all those peace loving [never mind]

assistance from within...of course...the national guard would be deployed within hours.  as far as outside assistance.....when's the last time you can remember that we required assistance??  Florida Hurricanes??  9/11?? the 89 San Fran quake??  St. Helens?? how much forgien aid did we receive??  hell...did we even EXPECT any?!? doubtful!

Personally for me, I would play this scenario in my mind, what happens if me and my family were caught in such a tidal wave, how would you survive? Would you carry around a small survival kit and what would you carry in it to help you survive?

My point is that aid should come from (a collective 'your') your goodwill and humanity.  Our aid is expected and even after it generously doled out, it is criticized for being to small or ineffective.  Screw'em you don't appreciate the help we give, how's about none.

I can understand this statement and to a degree, I can agree with you.

I am not for the all or nothing mentality.  Charity is not about recognition.  The payment for doing what is right is not glory or even appreciation

Water purification system.  I use a back packing ceramic filter type.

Asprin.  Most powerful, useful OTC drug out there.

A couple of MREs.

Medium to large quantity of small denomination US currency.  Kind of hard to ask for change from a $20 for a ride in a third world country.

A foreign country........

That's funny...

You did pose what you believe was a rhetorical question.

Of course we'll send money.  Actually, most of the world EXPECTS we'll send the most and all the time.  They have even gone so far as to call us stingy because we only dropped $15M originally.

Even though we'll send money and aid and rescue teams and DR's doesn't mean I have to like it or feign compassion for some of the folks who died who would have wished me and the rest of America death, does it?

Hell, I believe Mexico sent in a urban rescue team when the WTC's went down.....wanna bet we paid them?

well lay it on me, what assistance...if ANY...did we rcv??  on what kind of scale are we talking?? is it anything NEAR what we've dished out in the last 50 years?? HIGHLY doubtful.

The Christian-Judeo philosophy is alive and well. Guilt trips abound if posters aren't deeply saddened by the losses. We need to lay the guilt on heavy, then wear the guilt ourselves if we happen to be honest about a lack of sadness. Disasters are so heavily played by the media that we have all become accustomed to witnessing very real trajedy on the screen, again and again. Although I can wear the guilt suit as well as the next, it becomes increasingly difficult in a world that despises our country so openly and proudly, to really give a crap about it. I will however, continue to try!

Thankfully, the poll results show that a silent majority here is not a bunch of bigoted assholes.  This renews my faith in this crowd.

I have heard enough ignorant "those people," "those places," etc. these past two days to last a lifetime.  Someone actually said that "those people" "Danced in the streets" after the WTC was hit!  I was not aware that "Palestinians" were effected by this disaster!

I have also learned that ar15fan went to Thailand for sex, and seems to think that such is all the country offers.  I giess that explains all the tourists there with their young toddler children, heh?

If you only look for the bad, you will have no trouble finding it.

I agree.

When things this big happen it is not "us" or "them" but a human tragedy.

It is also NOT self created like the famine and tribal wars of Somalia. I have a strong "fuck them" attitude towards "those" people.

But this was a natural disaster that struck mostly peaceful, innocent and unsuspecting people. I generally have a tainted view of much of the population of California but when they got hit by their earthquake and those ballsy fuckers were climbing up into the collapsed overpasses to rescue trapped motorists it was no longer "those" people.

I was also not particularly fond of most New Yorkers but on 9-11 they ceased being "those" people.

All of "them" became a new group; "innocent victims."

Now if the damn thing struck a large Wahabi settlement in Saudi Arabia THEN it would be "those" people and I wouldn't give a damn. But sadly nature rarely punishes evil. Nature is random, and as "most" people are generally good with some bad, they are the ones who get hit most.

The majority of "those" people were simply doing their best to live their lives and take care of themselves and their families just like everyone here.

I'm not gonna jump on a plane and go help fix shit, and I probably won't send any money, BUT I will not start seeing them as "those" people nor look for justification that they somehow deserved it. That is what "some" people will do and I don't want anything in common with "those" people.

I answered, "Yes, but not much"....

I have made my thoughts pretty clear.  There was loss of life for which I will lose no sleep.  There were losses for which I mourn deeply.

The ones, like the the picture of the guy wearing the UBL t-shirt, can get dead quickly for all I care.
