The only one I've ever actually played was Civilization Revolution, and I really like it until you get into the modern era, then it loses a lot of appeal for whatever reason.
I have several RTS games and they are meh to me. I'm looking primarily for something on Xbox One, but something that will run on Mac would be ok too. Suggestions? |

The new Battletech will be nice. Although I have some serious reservations about certain points of the Beta. |

70% off shogun 2
it's a total war title, which means that it's turn based strategy, real time tactics. runs fine on mac. even as old as the game is, there are still people who play h2h battles online. |

There's a scenario-based campaign coming. Right now--it's just lance vs. lance up to a max of 25M C-Bills. I'm playing right now. I'm set up with a Panther light 'mech with a pilot who specializes in "Sensor Lock" and I've got three Catapults with dual LRM15s. Gonna be some fun-assed, LRM action! (top of the screen with the colored arrows indicate turns via initiative roll--allowing the winner to move last) http://i.imgur.com/yauN7b2.jpg I'm a huge Battletech nerd.

Xcom is good
Xenonaughts is a decent copy with some tweaks. Xcom 2 and Enemy Uknown are good after a couple tweaks from the nexus. Blood Bowl if monster football action sounds good. Jagged Alliance back in Action Silent Storm for some WW2 era action. Total War: Warhammer is turning out to be more challenging than I thought. Turn base strat level then rts Army level clashes. But you can pause to issue orders so it doesn't turn into quite a click fest. Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics. |

Is it anything like the old Mechcommander games. As I remember, those were pretty fun. Of course I still play the original Battletech: Crescenthawk's Inception for MS-DOS on DosBox. ![]() |

The problem with saying you want an RTS game is it doesnt cover whether you mean individual level RTS, squad level or battlefield level.
Lots of good suggestions above. I'll add (And some have been said) XCOM Panzer General Wasteland (1 or 2) are really good Fallout 1&2 are amazing Shadowrun series is also really, really good. Panzer Corps, think updated Panzer General Kings Bounty series Heros of Might and Magic series Civ X (X as in pick a number, not 10) |

Rome 2 would be a better option IMHO. The battles are more intuitive. there's a lot to chew, but it's a great deal if someone is willing to deal with the complications. edit: here is the motherlode: rome/rome 2 medieval 2, viking, shogun/S2, empire (british), and napoleon bundled for $30. OP, this would fill your free time for a couple of years. |

Master of Orion 2.
Hm... um... X-Com: Enemy Unknown. That one is pretty good. Actually, both that one and TFTD have been overhauled like crazy by fans over the years. It's been awhile since I played video games.
Civ 1 and 2 were good. 3 I didn't really care for. Civ 4 was good. I never played 5 and 6. But... Alpha Centauri. That one was incredible. That was the real sequel to civ, imo. |

I would love to see another command and conquer, I had a massive tank force https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uhhS4yPZIjA/U0zkLNjo0iI/AAAAAAAAB1k/siDlENkho6A/s1600/0303commandandconquergenerals10.jpg The new XCom and XCom 2 are pretty good. Lots of great mods out there in Steam workshop for XCom 2, and I love the customization you can do on each Soldier. You can download voice packs, like Sterling Archer (I ran a 6 person squad from Archer with custom voices) or Schwarzenegger. There's a pretty fun turn based Shadowrun game out, too. Old school, the old Masters of Orion 2 was great. So was Jagged Alliance 2. The remakes aren't bad, but not as good as the originals. |

I don't know anything about the new XCOM games, but the original was the shit back in the day, I still play it. It was ok. Never finished it. But yeah, the old Xcom, I used to play through once every couple of years or so. And MOO2, I would just run through quick games on impossible, tiny, just to see if it could be done in different ways. What way was the fastest path to victory, etc... I found if you started as a telepath, rushed a few missile destroyers and one cruiser, you'd basically win 9 times out of 10. Don't research any tech. Just build a few missile boat destroyers and immediately attack the first civ you encounter. The missile boats are basically suicide attackers to take out the enemy starbase. Then you mind control the planet and boom, you instantly have a second planet full of roided up impossible difficulty level AI pops to help you churn out a fleet for the next target. Once I figured that out, I never picked it up again. It kind of ruined it for me. |

Another vote for the XCOM (newer or older versions, can't go wrong, really).
I love the Mechwarrior universe and am thrilled to see a new TBS/RTS coming out in that universe. If you dig mech combat also dig into Missionforce: Cyberstorm, the second one can switch between RTS and TBS. |

Alpha Centauri (available from GOG on PC or Mac) is the RTS by which all others are judged. At least in my library. It's a Sid Meier civilization style game that takes place in space. Notable inclusions in the game are:
User customized units. Pseudostoryline interactions with the environment. Diplomacy that actually matters. Covert operations that actually matter. An AI that has distinct personalities for the factions and will intelligently use the above mentioned diplomacy and covert ops in conjunction with appropriate military action. Many difficulty settings to tailor replay. In game options (that I believe is still supported) for play by email multiplayer. Just watch out for Sister Miriam, she's pretty much Isis. |

Once I figured out I could spam the Guardian with 20+ suicide missile frigates in early game and come out with a huge advantage over everyone else, it lost it's challenge. The new MOO has the same trick. Dammit, now you're making me want to reinstall it just to try that.

haven't played rome, so i'll take your word for it. one of my frustrations with S2 is that there was little in the way of working your way up from small armies to large ones. i wanted more tutorials with only a few blocks of infantry/cav, so i could get the hang of combined maneuvering and managing time. i mean, the 3rd combat tutorial has something like 30 units of 8-10 different types, divided into 3 formations. and the historical battles are downright enormous (not to mention tactically complicated). there's a lot to chew, but it's a great deal if someone is willing to deal with the complications. edit: here is the motherlode: rome/rome 2 medieval 2, viking, shogun/S2, empire (british), and napoleon bundled for $30. Civilization series (except beyond earth, the endless trade route fuckery ruined that one for me)
Xcom (old and new) Heroes of Might and Magic series Endless Legend (a little buggy though) - fantasy setting empire building with a Game-of-Thrones-esque Eternal Winter is Coming mechanic and story Omerta - City of Gangsters - build your criminal empire at the city level, a big part of the game is xcom style combat missions |
