| Hi guys, my pet turtle who I keep outside is dead. Unknown causes, but I'd like to know what killed him. He was fully extended out of his shell, with large quantities of blood round the cracks of his shell and around the holes where his arms and legs and tail would come out of. His skin was purple in color, and very bloated. Please help. |
Born freeeeeeeee, as freee as the wind blows, as freeeee as the grasss grows free to follow your heart. At least he died out doors. Thats at least a little dignity for him. He was hit by a hollow point 1000 ft per second pellet sniper round.![]() Sorry he's gone. My son tells me every once in a while how he miss's his pet box turtle Sheldon. (course he's 6) |

We had a turtle that somehow managed to get himself into one of the berms under a HEMTT the other day, it died, almost exactly like you described yours. It didn't look like anything squished it, but it just kinda melted and swelled up out from under his shell.. it was actually stuck to the berm, I guess he got cooked on it... stank like nobody's business, we had to scrape him off and toss him into the woods. Was your turtle in the sun? maybe he fried to death.. the one I found had blood oozing out from under the shell and it was kinda bloated. |
| You probably will never know unless you do a necropsy. I was at the Vet collage one day with one of our crittters and asked about a turttle/tortise that they had there for care. Apparently they are very difficult to diagnose and treat, this one looked ok but they commented that it was very ill and not doing well. From my personal experience at the vet college, those folks know their stuff. In fact they have better treatments for animals than my mom got in the hospital for a broken hip. |
