SLC has a one cop per car system.

I almost always see two cop cars at a traffic stop. What's the criteria to need two cars / cops at a traffic stop?

Felony stop
Slow night
Sgt or WC needed/requested

Just depends on the call and the department.

There are 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the US. That's 18,000 different policies and procedures that may affect the answer.

Our town seems like it's a matter of if a second cop is free they'll head that way as a just in case back up until it's 100% certain whoever is being stopped isn't froggy.

It seems like a simple common sense way of keeping someone who's thinking about it from jumping out of line. Officer survival based on lessons learned.

Why do some garbage men use the robotic claw while others jump out the back and pick up the cans themselves?

Why do plumbers use the shit snake when they could use liquid stuff instead.

Why do some priests talk about certain subject matter more than others.

Question is too open ended to answer, really.

Boredom

Officer requests assistance

The more manpower the better

Multiple occupants in vehicle is a sure thing to get more units

felony stop

boredom

did I mention boredom?

Cops are people. Who would've thought?

Two cops in one car would be cheaper.

As far as gas and vehicle maintenance, sure. However, after patrolling alone for so long you develop a routine. Having another body in your car realllllllllly screws that up.

Can't patrol separately and back each other up as needed. One cop in each car covers more ground with more chances of catching something going on early and makes sense in a fairly peaceful area. Our little burg of 20,000 usually just has 3 or 4 cops on duty at any given time.

Out here one cop per car unless its a rookie on their FTO aka straight from the academy to show them how it really is on the street and see if the department wants to keep them. I'd imagine nation wide that would be the most likely reason for 2 per car.

Go to, Texas is it? You'll see literally fifteen cars every day pulling over some tatted-up MMA fighter. Literally.

We ride solo unless we have a recruit or too many cars are down. I always try to slide by other guys stops to check on them. We I work if we stop ten cars as a shift there will be warrants in eight of them lol. Like yesterday I stopped two cars and the drivers of both cars went to jail on felony warrants and both cars had other people in them. Just easier/safer to have an extra set of eyes in those sits.

More cars on the road give the illusion of police protection...and make it easier to write more traffic tickets.

I predict the usual anti-police herp and derp in this thread.

Here it usually appears to be when someone needs to do the roadside Olympics.  Otherwise there is usually just one car per stop.

Traffic stop is the most dangerous part of a cops job due to the unknown..

On a normal traffic stop if another patrol car is near the area and not busy, they will usually cruise by and make sure things are okay.

At least that was my experience as a dispatcher in the early 90's.

Holy shit. Yes, I should have searched "cop, stop, civilian, two, car, patrol" or whatever.

Just see bike cops one on one every day but very often two cars.

That is all. Dupe. Please lock.

I did learn that if a cop is bored he can just stop by and see how that ticket is going!
