WASHINGTON — The Air Force has awarded Boeing a $2.3 billion contract for 15 more KC-46 Pegasus refueling tankers.

In a contract announcement Friday evening, the Pentagon said the latest batch of KC-46s will make up the ninth production lot of the tankers, and their construction is expected to be completed by the end of August 2026.

Boeing said Monday this brings the number of KC-46s the Air Force has under contract to 128, 68 of which are delivered and in use.

Aren’t they still having trouble with these? I get that we desperately need tankers but…sheesh…

I talked to a crew at Oshkosh this summer when they brought theirs to the show. They told me they loved them after all of the fixes.  Even the boom operator said he preferred it. They were a mix of guys who previously flew KC-135 and KC-10s.

I was surprised. Boeing most recently had issues with FOD left in the airframe.

It's only a matter of time until this bites Boeing, hard. Sooner or later they're going to put a B flight into Lake Washington. And yes, I realize the KC-46 is based on the 767. It's a systemic problem.

Agree, I talked to a KC 135 pilot last summer at an air show. She was surprisingly candid about the new plane. Said there were lots of issues and didn't want any part of it.

I talked with a KC-46 crew member at the Dayton airshow this year, and the messaging was similar. He said the airframe had teething issues, but now that they have been worked out, is a drastic improvement over the 135 that he used to fly on.

Hopefully the KC-46 turns into a highly successful and mass produced airframe, lord knows we certainly need to replace the 135's

Did they ever add thrust reversers and give it the ability to land without dumping a huge amount of fuel?

Of course not.  Why add something so simple
