I'd like to keep a USB stick with personal data such as usernames and passwords and account numbers as well as electronic copies of birth certificates, NFA forms and other similar stuff I'd like protected.

What does the hive recommend? I'd like to install some kind of self contained secure shell that would not be dependent on a computer with specific software installed.  I  don't mind complex or semi complex setups as long as the act of entering and exiting the secure volumes is relatively simple after the setup is complete. It's got to be easy enough for my wife to use if I am unavailable or deceased.

I do something similar. I just made an AES-256 encrypted archive with 7-zip of all the files and put that on the USB drive along with the 7zip installer.

Veracrypt is currently the best free encryption software. It has ability  to work off a USB drive and I use it almost exactly as you are looking to do.

I'm doing Veracrypt  and keeping the application on the stick with the container.

Thanks!
