Since I've started school for IT, I've been buying tools to build cables. My next item I'd like to purchase is a USB to DB9 cable so I can use a laptop to console into a switch or Router as needed.

Everything I find on the internet, Has a male end DB9 and I think most equipment requires a female end for the cable. Where can I find such cable or do I need to buy adapters?

Most equip I've run into needs a male DB9 (has a female serial on the appliance). Cisco, foundry, HP, etc. Which ones you run into that need female?

Gender is important but so is the type of cable that is required for the application.  I think it might be safe to say the cable-type dictates the gender.

Think of the USB-to-Serial cable as a port, not a cable.  Does that even make sense?

Anyways, look at the USB-to-Serial device as if it is a connector on the chassis of your PC.

Then ask yourself what kind of cable you need to connect between your PC and the target device.

Null-modem (Cross)? or Straight-Thru?

Once you know what kind of cable you need, chances are the genders will work themselves out properly.

I've had good luck with this. It's a Prolific 2303 based device. Use it all the time for router/switch console access. Of course you'll need a console cable too.

Another +1 for the Prolific. Just got mine at Best Buy, nothing fancy. But it's perfect. Then I use whatever console cable came with the device or appliance and you're GTG. One thing to note, depending on your terminal software (PuTTY, HyperTerm, etc) it may be beneficial to go into Device Manager once the USB to Serial dongle is installed and manually set the COM port to a low number for that dongle (ie. COM2, COM3, etc). Some older term programs only like COM1-4.

If I remember correctly, When configuring the DB9 side goes into the router?
