If you travel throughout the Southwest, LA to Vegas, AZ, etc, it is inevitable that you will pass through one of the many BP Checkpoints.
That is the Federal Government.  What are they looking for, and what are their metrics/indicators?

Given the harsh criticism the President has been laying upon the AZ law, what are HIS people doing at those checkpoints?

CLEARLY they aren't racially profiling.  The President would obviously never stand for such a thing.

So why doesn't the Federal Government simply share the methods and metrics used by the Border Patrol with Arizona?

More to the point; IF AZ uses these same indicators and metrics -where is the problem?

Mostly they're looking for brown skin.  The dogs are sniffing for drugs.
To avoid racial profiling charges, they have to stop a few people with non-brown skin, but those just get a token look-see.
Another thing: had dinner last night with a BP agent, shooting buddy.  (I met him in a private carbine class; he was there at his own expense.)  He said
(1) He was not surprised that the guy who got bushwhacked last week went 0-for-46, because most BP agents can't shoot for s___,  He said they get 150 rounds per quarter for practice, and if they bring back their brass, they can get 150 more.  He said most of the guys just brought gave him their extra 150 rounds, because they didn't want it.
(2) A substantial number of the illegals they catch are Chinese and eastern European.

Drove from AZ to San Diego and back last week, outbound on the day that the shootout occurred near I-8, AZ84.  BP all along the way, mostly waved through, but got pulled aside twice.  Both times, "What is your citizenship?"  "US."  "Thank you, have a nice day."

I used to drive an 18 wheeler across there all the time.  depends on the checkpoint.  going westbound on 10 past las cruces, they usually just wave you through.  eastbound on 8, northbound on 19 in AZ, northbound hwy 70 in NM, and eastbound on 10 in Texas they would ask me what I am hauling, where i am coming from, is there anyone else in the truck, and if i am an American citizen.

only ever got pulled in for a closer inspection one time at the one near Van Horn TX because the old fucker running it didnt hear what I was telling him.

Skinny White Boy:  "Yes sir I am.  But I don't know about her (point to Latina GF in the truck with me), she don't speak English and just wanted a ride up North."

They have dogs that sniff your vehicle at the stop sign.

And yes, they profile.

They haven't stopped me or my dad or bunch of my other family, but that have stopped my cousin once because he was in a Caddy.

They usually have busses there and passenger vans that I assume is used for deporting.

I've seen people pulled off to the side and people entering the buses with what I assume are their vehicles parked off to the side.

Been stopped at them multiple times in Southern NM. Every single time I have been waived thru. One time on the way to Silver City NM to do some backpacking I came across one of those "temporary" ones that had the signs up about 3/4 mile from it to warn you (????), but anyway the car behind me stopped and someone got out of the trunk and started walking. I pulled up to the checkpoint and the agent waived me thru. Next car in line that was the one that stopped they waived him thru as well.

There's one between El Paso, TX and Carlsbad, NM that is sometimes manned and sometimes not. If you look there's a trail on both sides of the check point that leads off into the desert and I assume they let people out pick them up on the other side.

None of them have they ever asked me anything other than a little wave and I keep going. I don't know if they base it on your looks or your vehicle.  100% redneck with a 4wd truck and a toolbox in the back.

I always get stopped on 90 between Del Rio and San Antonio... Most of the time its the "Are you a US citizen" gig but last time, I was asked who was on the penny. A few times ago, I had my rifle case, ruck sack, LBV-E, my wife's set of gear, and some ammo cans all in the back seat. I went through the "Are you a US Citizen?" line. He looked in the back seat. Hiseyes widened just a hair and with a completely straight face, he looked right back at me and asked "Is that your ruck sack?"

All that gear in the back and he askes about the backpack?

No, not "bullcrap".  I've been through these countless times out WEST -never asked once.

They have similar border patrol checkpoints up here in NH and VT (typically on the interstate about 50-100 miles from the border).

Every time I have encountered one I have had to prove my immigration status by showing my green card.

Bingo- that's my experience, as well.

But back to the question at hand...

What are their SOPs at these checkpoints?

If AZ can claim to adopt these same methods, there would be no argument for Obama to make.

Not sure of the SOP, But I've been pulled over by BP down there before and questioned (always at night while snake hunting), and have been approached while hiking and camping and questioned (all in areas very near the border while looking for snakes).  If I understand AZ's new law correctly, it is less intrusive than what BP is already doing and I don't see how anyone has a legitimate gripe with it.

On 4 May 2010, I went through the Eagle Pass South Station.  The check point is on the north bound lane.

At least half of the Border Patrol folks there looked like me: of Swedish/German descent.

Me:  (rolls down window) Howdy.

Blonde haired BP Guy:  Hello sir.  Where are you coming from?  (looks into cab of truck)

Me:  The casino.  (Kickapoo Casino in Eagle Pass)

BP Guy:  Are you a US citizen?

Me:  You betcha.

BP Guy:  Did you go into Mexico?

Me:  Oh hell no!

BP Guy:  (Laughs)  Have a good one.

2 days later, they find $2.3 mil of cocaine.

I think they're doing the best job they can, given their constraints.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/feds_seize_7_million_in_cocaine_93117314_93117314.html

Agents at the Eagle Pass South Station on Thursday morning arrested the driver of a pickup after finding more than 70 pounds of cocaine in the gas tank, worth an estimated $2.3 million, the agency said. They became suspicious after noticing gasoline leaking from the tank.

Now - about getting asked citizenship status.

Back in the day when I had a mil sticker on the windshield, I'd probably get asked 1 out of 4 times.

Now that I don't need/have the sticker, I get asked every time.

Can't credit the hair cut then and now as I keep the same one.

THIS is a situation where 'profiling' is perfectly valid.

Unlike anti-terror security, the population of illegal immigrants in the southern border region DOES have observable features that can be profiled

I hate the dogs at that checkpoint. They always hit on blood and the agents always wonder why there is blood in the back of the truck. Gee it might have something to do with the deer head flopping around in the bed.

My pointer scared the shit out of one of the guys at the one west of Del Rio when he stuck his head in the back window of my truck and got a surprise licking.
