When I went in, SF wasnt an MOS that you could pick. Same with Sniper school. You went infantry and then you requested SF after you had been in for a couple of years. You could take an Airborne, or Ranger option when you signed your contract. Tell your recruiter that you want an 11 Bravo or 11 Xray MOS and ask him about the options available.

ETA: 11 Xray is: Infantry, Needs of the Army. You are in the infantry, but you will learn what skill set they are short on, at the time, ie. 11 Mike, Mech Infantry, etc.

Join the Infantry, go Airborne.  Life's too short to be a leg.
5/2/2006 3:42:58 PM EDT
[#8]
Special Forces anything is going to take a longer commitment then a "2 yr. stint".  Same goes with Sniper.  Are you wanting to enlist only on a 2 year enlistment?  That will limit your available choices.

I agree with the above advice, go 11B with airborne option.

Don't be a medic if Infantry is an option.

You may want to REALLY think about what choice you make.  Special forces is HARD to get into, not saying you can't do it ,but I doubt that you realize just how painful the process is.  Also, if you decide the ARMY isn't for you, then when you get out, do you have any skills that relate to the civilian market?  Please make an informed decision, not just based on the "I want to see action" part.  If you decide to do it, you have my full support and I will personally thank you and shake your hand if I ever meet you, so please don't think I'm trying to sway you in any direction because of a personal opinion.

I would imagine jumping out of planes would have to be at the top of the list as far as excitement. So you might wanna go the paratrooper route. And of course you'd have to do all of that anyway before you could move on to Ranger school or the Green Berets later.

As far as being a sniper, I am not sure that would generally be a job for those seeking lots of excitement.  Most of a sniper's duties involves lying in the prone position for hours at a time observing for targets. So that job would require extreme patience. Thus, it would probably be a job that's very boring most of the time, except when you are pulling the trigger.

I am sure some of the others here can help you.

First, I have no idea why anyone would desire to see combat.  That being said, there are several options available.

You can now contract for SF options.  That doesn't mean you'll be accepted, but you're guaranteed a slot.  Same with Airborne.

If you want to be a medic, you can do that, too.   Same with infantry.  You can go medic and still go SF.  Same with Airborne and Ranger.  Have you taken the ASVAB yet?

It really doesn't matter what you choose, if it's combat arms, you'll most likely do a tour overseas.  Particularly if you want to go.

Bah.  Go Infantry.  Being a medic won't prepare you for... wtf did you say?  Medical school?  Roger, skip being a medic, go Infantry & Airborne.  Do that.

You want highspeed, go to combat, tough guy stuff?  Forget everything but Infantry.  And Airborne - don't be a leg.

You'd do medic first.  If you want to be guaranteed an airborne slot, your best bet is to go infantry and contract for it.

Medic MOS, with an Airborne contract. Tell the recruiter that you must have Airborne school in your contract. If all goes well, assuming you graduate your MOS school (AIT) you will then go to Airborne school. Look me up when you get here, I'm at Ft Benning.

Do they still have 12 Echoes?  If so, they might have a job to do in Iran soon.  It could look like an "accident"  That would be exciting.  If you don't know what I'm talking about Google SADM.

And no, I wasn't one.

I had Cavalry and Airborne in my contract when I signed up,
it was an interesting choice.
It sucked a lot of the time, but when it was cool, it was very cool!

But, no matter what you choose don't be a leg!!

You know, you could always consider 96 Bravo, Counter Intell, though if I had it to do all over again, I would have my eyes fixed and see if I could be an Apache Pilot

Dude, Im either a mechanic or intel, not saying which, and its a damn fine job. You ever have a General ask you what you thought and then take your advice?

We had one kid tho, 19, he could not stand it, and joined the SF, and now he is very happy.

Go SF, then in 4 years, reclass to Intel, like 97E or 97B. You get to interogate!

Go this route:

11b/X Option 40

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR CONTRACT:

11B/X (either or)
AIRBORNE
RIP

Make getting into a Batt PRIORITY #1.

LEARN how to be a high-speed, hardcore hooah MF.  THEN go to SF selection.  Odds are if you go 18X off the bat, you will end up in the 82nd.  bear in mind, being in the 82nd is X magnitude better than being a fooking cook @ Ft Lost in the Woods.

Get in a Batt.  Be a Batt Boy.  Be a bad light infantry mo-fo.  LEARN your job.  LEARN land nav.  THEN go to SF Sel.

Go here for help: www.armyranger.com/

Go here for help on SF Selection:  Get Selected!

ETA:  When you go to SF Selcetion, you can only go as you current combat arms MOS.  The is no MOS for SF/Sniper.  Beg, plead, bribe, threaten, grovel etc.....that's what you do to get sent to the Benning Marksmanship School for Bad MoFos.  Practice target ID at 800M+ before going.....that's what fails alot of dudes.

You look like you and your buddy are loving it.

If that was a serious post, I would have suggested SF. Then he could have possibly had all of those skills and a bunch more rolled into one MOS.

My dad was a medic and then went to med school, it worked out well for him.  He dose not think to highly of medic though, having been through it.  He said they were some of the dumbist people he has ever met.  But that was the Army 30 years ago.  I have been thinking about the Airborne myself.  Keep us posted.

Enlisting on the "SF baby" contract may sound good..........but if you wash out (Large percentage do)....you'll end up on the line way behind your peers that came in the same time you did.  I never really thought being able to enlist for SF was a great idea anyway and I've been told that it's a "marginally" successful program.  Whatever you do, talk to people before you sink your teeth into a recruiters promises or visions of your future......they're under a lot of pressure and aren't always as straight shooters as they could be.  Problem is you won't know until it's too late.
My advice is credible.......11B3P5W
