| Has anyone run or trained (or helped someone else train) for one? |

I've never run one myself, but I know a few folks who have, including Jenn Shelton from Born to Run. I talked to Jenn a couple of times about how she trained for those events. Her answer was pretty simple - "run, a lot". I know that she did most of her running in First Landing State Park in VAB on the trails. She said she didn't do super-huge training runs, but would do things like back up a 20 miler with another 20 miler the next day.
Not sure what distance you are looking at, but, as an endurance athlete, my recommendation would be to train primarily like a marathoner, but drop any track work in favor of more running at half marathon to marathon pace and every couple weeks do a big 2-day overload block. I would also really work on run frequency, 5 days/week minimum and 6 would be better with a couple days where you run twice - not super huge, but one "normal length" run and another shorter run. Targeting any race in particular. |

I've done 12 and 24 hour endurance events (and a bunch of short ones) but multisport, not just running. Check out Dean Karnazes for info on ultras.

I've never read Born to Run before. I can honestly say just coming across people like David Goggins and Keith Zeier inspired me to get in to it.
I actually met Akos Konya at a race last year. He's probably a no namer to everyone on here, but he is a VERY accomplished ultramarathon runner and I would even go as far as saying he's one of the best. Very nice guy, and was inspiring watching him run 85+- miles in 12 hours. My goal is to do 100 in under 24 by July. As far as the Mud Run I have no idea, are you referring to the one here in Jacksonville this March? |

I've never done it before, but some of the chicks on the website look pretty hot Looks pretty fun -IAMLEGEND, do you still run 12/24 hour races? No. I had two surgeries (sinus and appendix) a few years back and while I was recovering my GF and I got married and totally derailed my racing. Now I just ride and do backcountry stuff for fun and fitness, not competition. It's ok really because it turned into work to ride and do stuff I used to love so I didn't enjoy it much. I think I'm actually happier doing it for fun. I raced in some awesome events though. High Mountains Wasatch AR in Utah, the Kokapelli in Grand Junction, Salomon Winter Adventure Race in Sol Vista (I met Ian Adamson there...-23 degrees on the start of day 1 without accounting for wind chill...) and some others. I got to race against Mike Kloser a few times (although it was more of an ass kicking than a race...I am not really competition for guys like Kloser and Adamson). I navigated for my team when I raced (I have a geography related degree, am a GISP and navigate when I play in the backcountry) and I still like that part a lot. I like orienteering and bc navigation for fun still. |
