So I was bored and typed in Upright Rows into BB.com just to read up on them more.
I've done them on occasion in the past but had always relied on Side Lateral raises for the medial delt. I grew up on Muscle & Fitness/Flex/MD etc mags so I knew about in's and outs on form blah blah blah... Then I start seeing all the threads about them being dangerous, shoulder impingement that may or may not happen or even chronic pain that may or may not happen now or sometime in the future. Then arguments about iso versus compound etc... I have been using them with the wide grip on a straight bar, go about mid chest level, feels fine. I'm not in love with them but use them as second exercise to front press (ohp/mil press whatever you want to call them). Why? Because I have no dumbbells to do lateral raises... I just don't really have the money for dumbbells just yet. Most I've gone up to has been 45lbs for 8 reps, at least what I can find written. To get dumbbells from 20-45lbs in 5 lb increments would be around $250 or so. I really don't want to charge a card either... |

The power lifting (minus the bench/squat/deadlifts) and oly lifting will never be apart of my routine so I'll just admire those that can But I've never had a problem with them before, granted I have never done them for extended periods of time. I have bad shoulders anyway... As it is I'm gonna keep them in the line up... All I have is a barbell... I was just surprised to see all the hate for them. Like I said, I'm not in love with them, just filling a gap... |

I like to do them on shoulders/traps day. Ill get a heavy EZ bar, load it a couple 35lb plates, and use a close grip, bringing it up around collarbone level. No issues yet. Ill do them towards the end of a workout, after the primary shoulder exercises This^^^ I use a cheap CAP "super curl" bar, and grip it right on the center bends. No pain, no problem, and no reason to stop doing them. |
