So I have I'm looking to sell a sporty car here at some point.  The car would be listed around 20k+.  The questions I have are:

1.) What do you consider an acceptable payment method (assuming non-cash)?  Bank check?  Wait to clear?

2.) Test drive.  This isn't a 2 or 3k clunker that I could care less about.  I'm just worried about the type of people that are only looking to drive fast and walk away.

I've never been in that position but if I were:
1.  If they can get a $20K check, they can get $20K cash.  Might have to go to their bank & confirm an electronic transfer, maybe?  Either way, noone gets nothin until I'm satisfied the money is in my hand or in my account.  A fancy piece of paper with numbers don't get it done.
2.  Go on test rides.  Make it clear abusive driving of your car will not be tolerated.

Immediately negotiable cashiers check.  Do the transaction at the bank, that way you know the check is real.  Title sign, check exchange.  Lots of cameras and witnesses.

1) Cash or Certified Bank Check only (and in case you don't know, there is a difference between a check and a Certified Bank Check) - do not negotiate on this issue. No half now / half later - no ' deposit' - no 'I'll pay you the rest when I get paid' - no payment plan - no I'll pay part of it now and paypal you the rest when I get home, etc - stick to your guns :o)

2) Test drive - I don't know about that

Test drive is easy, you ride along on the test drive.

Certified bank check if not cash.

I just bought a new vehicle at a dealer with a certified bank check, they didn't have an issue with it, you shouldn't either. I'd have it drawn on a local bank or CU if you're worried about that and you can always call and verify it if you want to.

Bank checks can and are faked.  You can go to their bank and the bank can write the check with you there and you can sign over the title.

My bank will provide a verification hotline (the number is verifiable through their website) for such purposes.

When we've done this, we met up with buyers at their bank.  They test drove the car.  Decided to buy.  We went inside and a certified check was issued.  The good part is banks always have a notary, so title can be signed over and witnessed on the spot.

You leave with check.  Buyer leaves with car and title.  Everyone is safe and legal.

How about instances where the potential buyer is from out of state and has no branches near?

then you do a money transfer.
have your bank call their bank.
when your bank is happy they got the money, you can sign over the title.

That's just a little stack maybe an inch or so high, a bit more if there are some 50's and 20's in it.

This...your bank/CU may call the issuing bank when you deposit but no bid deal.
No way would I do cash for that amount...

Test drive? Use your gut when he or she talking about the car, initial meeting. Ride along for sure. Hell, have a buddy come over to help watch things.
