I am asking about using dessicant in my gun safe and ammo cans because I do store them in my house here in Florida. The a/c is on all the time which I would think helps with keeping the humidity in check. Should I also be using dessicant ? If so, please explain why and exactly where would I buy it in a form that would be useful and convienent for gun safe/ammo applications ? |

I bought a big can of dessicant, about 5 inches in diameter, with a plastic see through part on the top so you can tell when it needs to be recharged. Think it was about $35. Honestly, I never use it. It is humid here in southern TX but the AC dehumidifies the house and I never have a rusting problem. If you need to use desiccant, however, the can would be ideal. |
| Bass Pro, Cabellas, etc. sell gun safe dessicant in coffee can size containers. It's renewable using a kitchen oven for a couple of hours at 250 degrees. WalMart sells a nifty digital hygrometer (humidity gage) for $8 which reads out current humidity and temperature as well as high and low humidity for the past 24 hours. The gage has a magnetic base and sticks to the inside wall of the safe. Its sensitive enough to change readings within a couple of seconds after opening the safe door. |
