| Here I sit watching Saving Pvt Ryan for the 3rd time and the question comes to mind as to why they didn't use smoke at Omaha beach? |
The weather was just barely adequate for the operation. The landings were supposed to have occured on the 5th, but the weather was just too bad. It was then either go on the 6th, or wait for the next window when the tides, moon, etc were favorable, which was (IIRC) another 2 or 3 weeks. OPSEC concerns nixed that as an option. |

I "Think" alot of it too (And I'm entirely prepared to be corrected on this) was that Omaha beach wasn't really deep enough for "smoke" rounds to be of much use. The German Arty fires would've been pre-planned (And well-laid) and the close-in MG's would've been shooting off of their range cards. Obscuration fires would've helped some but only at the lowest levels of German direct-fires. |
Wow, two correction tards within seconds of each other. ![]()
They both seem to fit, but whatever...

Don't take it so personally. You will find that most people whose occupations include being shot at go through training that continuously stresses the differences between cover and concealment (and dictionaries don't have much to do with that training) and you will discover that a LOT of those people post here. And calling people "tards" isn't gonna improve things much. |
It's a technical term, like roof vs. ceiling, clip vs magazine, bullet vs. round, or wheel vs tire. Technical discussions require the use of technical terms. |
I know. However correction without explanation is being an ass. People tend to be an ass on here much more than in real life face to face. So, they can lick my fecal stained ass crack. |
You won't last long with that attitude. You'd do well to chill out, lest ye be locked. |
I've been there and I'm telling you... It is deep from the shoreline to the bunkers. I dunno why they didn't use smoke, hell maybe they did... |

It probably would have hurt them more than the Germans. As has been stated all of the German fire would have been preplanned. Even if they couldn't see too well, they could still cause a lot of destruction just by the preplanned arty and mg fire. There were only a few places to land so it's not like the Germans had to constantly scan the entire beach. The allies would have had a harder time of landing and breaching all of the obstacles with heavy smoke. And because of landscape and terrain, it wouldn't have really been possible to use smoke properly. That is as a wall of concealment between you and them. Thick enough smoke to conceal the allies, would have been thick enough to completely smoke up the entire beach, affecting the allies as well. |
Probably because they weren't being presumptuous enough to assume you did not know, they simply reminded you. But in the interest of explanation cover is something that actually protects you from incoming rounds and concealment simply hides you from being targetted by incoming rounds. |
You're as good as locked. |

Smoke would have been of little use. Its a thin strip of land with gunners with pre-set fields of fire, the machine gunners are not aiming at individual guys, they are moving the TnE across the field while holding down the trigger, its set up so that when all of them do this at once, even if they cant see, someone will be shooting everywhere on the beach. ETA: I see people beat me to it. |
| Dude comes in asking about smoke in combat...couple people in-the-know course correct him a little...fuckstick tells people trying to educate to lick his ass...I was going to provide some details and lessons learned from Baghdad...I now tell butt dumpling to eat shit and die...I don't care if twat waffle learns anything about my world... |
+1, you are afterall, not a hall monitor.......
