I have never gone hunting before.  Not that I'm opposed to it, just never went and I couldn't see killing an animal for no apparent reason. ( my ex-wife would have refused to cook/eat anything I shot and the meat would have gone to waste).  Anyway, one of my co-workers has kinda put the bug in my ear to go hunting.  I still probably wouldn't use all the meat, but Virginia has a program for hunters to donate the meat/kill to folks who need food.

I have two rifles at home, my AR and a K98 (all my other stuff is in Florida in storage at my parents).  Both rifles are iron sights, and I am more comfortable/accurate using the AR over the K98 (I'm sure with a little practice I can be just as accurate with the k98).  Just wondering how the .223/5.56mm does against a deer.

While teh AR would probably do fine, I would recomend using the Mauser. It will give you a lot more room to hunt, and nobody in thier right mind will accuse you of not using enough gun.

I generally use an AK to hunt, and often times I use iron sites, although I do have a scope that I normally use.

Check the State law on deer hunting before you use the AR. In Kansas anything smaller than .243 is illegal.

hunting is fun, but hard work; you also need lots of patience

what are you hunting??

man, deer meat is awsome!
some of the best meat out there; lean and tasty

ARs are alright to use vs deer, but you have to have the right load (64gr power pt. is recommended); check your st laws

personally, id go w/ the krag (8mm right??) --it will take any deer down, 1 shot

I've also heard that some states have mag capacity limits on what is legal on a deer hunting rifle.  Take that with a grain of salt.  Just what I've heard.

Some states prohibit using AR's for deer. Know why? The round isnt worth a shit on large game. 5.56 is made to kill humans. You aint huntin humans.
Take the K.

Good point.  .223 is made to take down something 200lbs or less.

I guess I'll be using the K98.  Sounds like it would be a better choice of round. Now I just need to get my license and take my rifle to the range a few times to get use to how it shoots vs my AR.

It is illegal to hunt deer with a .22 cal in Virginia.  Take the K98 and order some good European hunting ammo for it.  The K98 sights aren't the greatest in the world, there's a guy that sells an adjustable peep sight that can replace the rear sight , I can't think of his name right now though.

Prarie Dogs, Yotes, and Crows.

Wife don't have to cook nothin, you get trigger time, along with tactics training (try sneaking up on a yote or a crow and you will understand that part).  Cheap, fun, and you get out of the house!

Recommended:  20" bbl, 20rd mag, 4x optic in SD.  In your location, iron sights would seem to suffice since  shots would generally be under 200 yards.

I dropped a 180 lb. buck with one 35 yd. shot from my AR.

But check your local regs to see if it's allowed.
