Virginia provides interesting data on gun control. When the Federal AWB expired, Washington Post did some research into VSP records a few years later to show the effect of the end of the bans. VSP recorded detailed records of guns seized at crime scenes. To nobody's surprise, standard capacity magazines displaced restricted capacity mags in the marketplace. WaPo framed this as a clear indication that the AWB provided some good, and actually had an effect. What they did not report was that after the AWB expired, homicide rates in Virginia continued their downward trend. According to state and FBI UCR reporting, rates of homicide and even the number of victims per shooting (which is used as a proxy to imply effect of mag restrictions) continued down and low, DESPITE the total replacement of restricted capacity mags with standard capacity. IOW, if you bothered to look up information that was excluded from the WaPo study, you find that their report established that the magazine bans did not have an effect on homicides and shooting victims. |
