I got my "preliminary" disability rating from the DAV today and I can do most of the math. However, The bilateral math is throwing me off.

So, I got a 20% evaluation for gout and arthritis in bilateral feet, bilateral knees, bilateral hips, bilateral ankles, and bilateral toes.

After some research I have found this example:

Treat the two 10% bilateral as a single 21% and combine on the chart as usual.

10% + 10% = 19% + 1.9% = 20.9% rounded up to 21% for bilaterals

21% (the combined bilaterals plus 10%)

So, the bilateral rating for both legs should be 40%...right?

Other ratings are (non-bilateral) are: 30, 30, and a few 10%.

So, if I do the math I get 70%. Is that correct?

lets say you are hit with 30% for a back injury and that is the strongest.

now your hit with 20 percent for your legs. that doesn't equal 50%. You get the 30% and 20%of the remising 70%.

Repeat as necessary

VA math is confusing as hell. Download a copy of CFR-38 and it has a chart that explains it very well. Or try this http://www.vvaarizona.org/combined_disability.php

Yea...I never bothered to figure mine out. IIRC, all of the injuries and damage came to 90% when added up but my rating is 60%. I believe that it's due t the fact that some of the injures are on the same limb or body part so a full percentage wasn't given.

Congratulations on getting that straightened out.  I am waiting on an appeal due to gout in my left toe.

Throw in "sleep apnea" and "back pain" and you'll get the 30% you're wanting.
