Can't recommend enough. WW1 was just other worldly. I listened to this in it's entirety a few months back, it was absolutely amazing. I can hardly imagine the resolve these countries, and the actual people on the front lines/homefront had at the time. The losses and destruction was staggering. It is a worrying thought to me that in these cases, authoritative regimes have shown that they can, and will, bleed their people dry in pursuit of their objectives. |

I've been there. The unddulating ground is evidence of the artillery bombardments that place endured. Also saw the spot where only the tops of the bayonets are showing - the soldiers clutching the rifles are still down there.
You'd think that we would have learned by now the horrors of war and how to avoid it. |

If the French would have just given up Verdun and retreated to the forest behind it.
They would have tripled German losses. But, I understand that giving up the fortress, would have been an embarrassment. I think the German commander said. "We will bleed them white" He damn near did. |

But can you really consider the French government at the time to have been an authoritarian regime? Certainly, the USSR under Stalin is the epitome of an authoritarian regime. Would the US and its allies do the same thing today in the face of a conventional war with China and/or Russia? |

I wonder how far WW1 set civilization in reverse. Apparently, prior to WW1, it was a very optimistic and good time to be alive. Shit, one good illustration is that very respected guy who said prior to WW1, that a global war couldn't happen because of how great inter-commerce between nations had become. |

Been there. The feeling you get is really hard to put into words. To put the scale of losses in the First World War in perspective, on the first day of the First Battle of the Somme the British had over 19000 men killed (total casualties close to 60K). As a percentage of the population this would be equivalent to 85K American soldiers killed in one day. The Vietnam Memorial only has 58K names on it. |

The looks on their faces told me a lot about the politics of France after 1918. The Ossuary is not like Arlington. The Ossuary is a warning. |
