There is no "volume" in the list to choose from.

Either log off and log back on or restart the computer.  Mine has done that before and after I researched it I found it was normally just a temporary thing.

Did you scroll through the entire list, You don't see the speaker icon?

Do you have the choice to restore default icon behaviors?

Is this windows 7?

You'll find it under the "notification area" tab in Vista or by clicking the "customize" button on the "taskbar" tab in Windows7.

XP Toshiba laptop

I clicked restore defaults but nothing changed.

I looked at the control panel under sounds too. Doesn't seem to be an option any where to "show icon" whatever.

Does it matter if there is a volume control on the laptop itself ? I swore it used to be in the tray though.

Control Panel | Sound

Uncheck
"Show audio Icon in toolbar", click "Apply", recheck "Show Audio Icon in Toolbar", click Apply.

You should be good to go.

Are you getting ANY Sound?

If the system doesn't recognize the audio card, it won't display the options.

In Sound/Audio control panel, click on the "Audio" tab.  Make sure your card is listed as the default output device.  Check "Always use preferred devices".

You should then have the volume back, if you have it checked to show in taskbar (if not, uncheck it, click apply, re-check it, click apply as stated above).

If not, some update messed up your audio drivers and the OS doesn't think you have sound.

I had the same problem with XP and did what the other posters said to do.  I had no icon in the bottom toolbar and when I went to the control panel the sound area was faded/transparent so I could not click on it nor change it.  Restarting fixed it.
