I just started yesterday, and it's pretty cool! Don't even know there's anything going on in the background.
I'm not very good at explaining this type of stuff, so here a link to how it works.. I figure if I'm not using my pc to its full potential, why not let science use it. |

I was on team arfcom until my power bill went through the roof. |

Quoted: I was on team arfcom until my power bill went through the roof. 1. extension cord 2. neighbor 3. ??? 4. PROFIT!! I forget why I couldn't use vim for the Folding team, so I dredged up a username from back in the day. Just running on a desktop, since running it across my vast and insanely powerful computing empire requires, like, memos 'n' shit. |

I had my PS3 and an Nvida card with 128 processors cranking out workunits. I was zipping up the team standings fast, but pulled the plug last summer. |

I used to work on SETI@home project for years...haven't done it on the last couple of machines that I've had though. |

My dad called me one day to talk about it and could not possibly understand why I didn't want to do it and seemed to think I was a selfish asshole and or insane.![]() yes it will turn the back of your computer into a blow torch, and the power bill is crazy. i called the power company up a 2-3 months after getting my new i7 rig and F@H to talk about my bill: CSrep: well we see 3 months ago you power usage almost tripled.... |

So has anything come from this project yet other than some research papers? Any major break throughs or just kind of an intellectual exercise? Might be interested in hooking a couple seldom used computers up, but don't know much about it. I used to do Folding at Home for 5+ years. I got tired of the attitude the head of the project had - that donors were disposable and he mostly didn't adequately address our concerns. He took us for granted, and I had had enough.
A big turnoff was a project wherein they were using certain video cards to do calculations. A ton of people, myself included, bought a number of those cards since the points returned for work was quite high. The client was quite buggy, and after about a year as I recall, they basically said that the results were not as expected, that they were changing video cards that were useable, and that sorry, tough shit that you users invested a bunch of money on cards. I don't miss the much higher electric bills. I SHOULD have spent the money on cases of XM193 and I'd have done quite well. |
