I recently acquired a 1942 (?) fixed rear sight Browning Hi-Power pistol, with matching serial number 190xxx on the slide, barrel and frame along with the WaA140 "Waffenamt" stamps and eagle markings.  I haven't taken it out to the range yet, but I gave it a good once over and everything appears to be in perfect working condition.

I noticed that the slide on my pistol doesn't have the bevel on the right side, like a lot of WWII era Hi-Powers do in pics that I've seen online and I'm looking for any info on if/when this was discontinued?

You're talkIng about the cutout that lines up with the slide-stop?

I think this was omitted as a wartime expediency, and resumed after the war, I have a 61 FN Argy police that has the cutout.

He means the thumbprint.

I don't know.
I had one made in 43, but don't believe I've seen one without.

I noticed that mine didn't have that and now I'm curious.  A friend of mine suggested only shooting 115gr FMJ's.  Plan to take it out to the range soon.

You may also want to check for a cracked or broken firing pin retaining plate, a common problem.

ETA: you may want to ask in the Browning section of the handgun forum, or hipowertalk.com.

Thanks.  I took the plate off, checked it and cleaned the pin and spring.

I have the same gun but unfortunately the front sight decided to fall off the last time I shot it. I may end having to make a replacement.

Same, as in without the thumb print bevel?

I thought it was, just checked out my photobucket and it turns out it does. I'm not at home at the moment.
