This isn't a troll thread.  I am posting to let iPhone users know about a potential issue.  I'm sure this will turn into a pissing contest but that isn't the point.

There seems to be a issue with iOS 7.1.1 update when you do it OTA(over the air).  It is causing some devices to brick.  It happened to a guy that worked for me.

It bricked my iPad Mini upgrading from iTunes.
I was able to recover/restore from backup but it was a pain in the ass

We lost about 70 Windows PCs at work last November during that patch cycle.

Even after 40-60 hours on the phone with Microsoft they couldn't figure it out.

and your point is?  I was trying to do people a favor.  Don't turn this into the typical GD asshat thread.

I thought I remember seeing a warning not to upgrade OTA when I did my 5s last month. A few people I know are having problems with text messages not being sent/received after upgrading.

I did two 5s phones and an iPad OTA without issue.

I've upgraded my 5s, (2) 5c's, and our iPad all OTA.
No problems. The devices with problems are not bricked, they are easily able to be restored. Bricked=dead, and that's not happening.

When will you people learn?

NEVER ACCEPT UPDATES FROM APPLE. They break shit on anything that's not a 'new' model, because the ghost of Jobs wants you to buy more of his "magical" shit.

You are in the minority. Sure if you have an iphone4 might not be the best, but newer phones benefit from the update.

Am I really? Everyone I know with an "obsolete" Apple product that took the iOS7 update when it came out had SOMETHING break on their device. They're optomized/tested only on the newest Apple products, because they don't give a fuck what happens to the old ones. "Oh, your iPhone 5 broke when you installed the newest iOS? Hm, that's too bad. Well, to fix it, you could buy the new iPhone 5s off your contract for the low, low price of $700!"

Updated out 2 iPhone 5's, and they're both fine.

I suspect this isn't a widespread problem.

Still running the last stable iOS 6 here on a iPhone 5.  I'm hoping iOS 8 will ditch the iEyebleed Purty Pastel 'N White scheme they went to but doubt it.

Staying at 6 as long as I can.

OP Please.  Every update comes with it the risk of bricking the device.

Ip 5s. Updated OTA (wifi) while plugged in. No problems except Touch ID works so well now that I open the phone by accident sometimes.
