I know the agitator typically turns one way.  The other day I observed this, but found it peculiar that it seems to almost constantly spin  - almost without pause so to speak.  I thought it should pause momentarily.  Actually, for sake of making a point, I expected it to advance about a quarter turn or so, turn backward slightly (may half that), then advance a quarter turn again.  If I put a little backward pressure on the agitator by hand that's what it does.  I looked at home repair videos on youtube and I'm not sure there's a problem as it does move forward - not moving seems to be the typical problem.  It's a Kenmore purchased in '94.  Been a real workhorse.  Any thoughts from anyone with knowledge on this subject?  Thanks all.

The Agitdogs are worn. Cheap and easy to replace, will work like new when replaced. Right now, your clothes are not being washed properly. The Agitdogs lock up, allow it [agitator] to rotate, then release on the bacstroke, the grab on the forward. The small teeth wear down over time [nylon] and fail to grab the outer toothed ring.

Had the same problem a couple months ago.  Agitdogs are easy to replace.  Locally I could not find anyone who carried them for my washer so I had to order them off the internet and it took a couple days.  Might want to try youtube, there were several videos that showed how to repalce them.
