Hi, today my wife alerted me to an issue she was having with the washing machine. It began to make a loud knocking noise and when she opened the door, smoke bellowed out. It appears that the smoke was caused by the drum rubbing against the rubber gasket. I'm not sure if this is normal but when I spin the drum it moves left and right "not is a static circle". Also, there is a squeaking noise and it seems to be rubbing against the plastic drum housing. Wondering if the bearings are shot or something else. From what I've read, washing machine repair is a black hole of cash and it might be better/cheaper to replace it. Any thoughts/recommendations. I appreciate any input. Thanks -Rob

Get rid of that front loader and get you a used top loader for $300.  It'll last for years.

Buy a new one

Do you wanna risk that thing burning down your damn house or spilling 20 gallons of water all over the floor and causing $2K worth of damage to walls / floor ?

How old is it?

If it's > 10 years old, replace it.

If it's newer I would get it fixed.

Buy LG next time.

It's about 4.5 years old now. Just didn't want to scrap it for a new one if it was an easy fix.

Bearing roached. Junk it. Even if replaced, because the aluminum will be corroded and etched where the bearing is, the replacement one will fail far quicker then the original. Many places won't even touch replacing the rear bearing [main support] because of labor costs, the high percentage of unhappy customers and customers not wanting to pay. You pretty much have to gut the entire washer to do it so it isn't cheap. The part itself doesn't cost much.

Thanks for the input. We ended up going with a new top loader, and went with the 5yr warranty just to be safe. Thanks again!
