It was a big deal when it aired in the early 80's.  It probably spawned the ninja craze of the 80's.  I liked it when I saw it when I was older.  I was in like 2nd grade when it first aired.

Is the series on Netflix yet?

Really enjoyed the miniseries when it originally aired.  I have the series on DVD and watched it again a few years ago.

If you like the miniseries, I highly recommend the book.  I tore through 800 pages in one day; it's a great read.  It started a little Clavell kick where I read Shogun, Taipan, and King Rat, one after another.

Rereading the book right now, what a great novel.  Might  grab the blu ray, been a long time since I  have seen it.

IIRC, there is a 2hr movie version, but the full miniseries is 12hrs.
My mom worked the evening shift back then, so I was responsible for taping it for her.
On our Betamax VCR.

Dupe! (from a few years ago I think). We were assigned to watch it for homework when the miniseries originally aired back when I was in highschool. We also had to watch The Day After. Got a few parents complaining iirc.

I'm slowly working through the audio book right now.  It's very good, I saw the series when I was a kid but remember very little of it.

I like it and it was a great book.  Back at that time, there were rumors that Sean Connery was originally going to star in it.

It's amazing series.  Interesting that James Clavell was actually a prisoner in a Japanese POW camp during WWII.  Perhaps writing that book (along with King Rat)  helped him heal from the ghastly horrors he saw there.

We enjoyed it very much.  We'll probably drag out the vhs, or even spend money on a new format.

Good shit.
