| Have about a 10 year old Sears [yeah yeah, it's all I could afford at the time] softener that isn't softening. Electronics are good, motor is good, pulled the head and that was good, [seals and O rings, no build up] Water fills the brine tanks fine, goes thru all the motions but doesn't actually soften the water. Put it back together, hooked an air compressor to the different lines and cycled it thru the paces manually while I blew controlled air pressure thru the line that was supposed to be in use on each function. Didn't notice any blockages. Then, did a pressure test of it at 30 PSI and it held pressure fine. Anyone have any ideas other then buying a new one? |

I used a resin cleaner from these guys: http://www.ohiopurewater.com/shop/customer/home.php?cat=757
It has worked well. |

Maybe the resin bed is used up? +1. The resin breaks down over time due to chlorine added to city water. Flow through the bed drops significantly. I just changed mine after 13 years - fixed the problem completely. No chlorine, well water. I just have issues with some rust and lime. |

Little cone shaped thing to the side of the motor. turn water off, unscrew this cone and check the screen in there and the gasket underneath the plastic piece. my gasket had cracked because of age. screen was also clogged. Screen is good, The gasket does have a very small tear in it but from what I can tell, it really can't affect anything as it just goes to the brine tank and can't bypass anything. Yanked it again, it's not really torn but the green side of the gasket is almost like goo and mushed into the grooves. |

One of the happiest days of my life was when I got rid of my POS Sears water softener and called in Culligan. I have the best water that I've ever had for the last year. The Sears unit made it about 6 years but NEVER worked the way the Culligan unit does.
Somewhere inside the Sears unit it reduced from 3/4" to 1/2" then back out to 3/4" I always thought I just had shitty water pressure, I could only run one faucet at a time. I can now take a shower while the wash machine is filling up. Happy days!

seems like I was reading somewhere that a tear in that gasket will stop flow somewhere(sorry for the vagueness, I forget the flow pattern) also the small orifice beneath that needs to be clear
ETA I think a tear prevents the brine from being drawn up into the softener |

Did your's just stop working all of a sudden or gradually? |

I wonder if the store carries part #718 7772 in the softener section. |
